Construction Forecast
Volatile material prices, labor market shortages and skyrocketing transportation costs presented disproportionate challenges to the construction industry in 2021. Still, economic recovery persists as we head into 2022, with some economists projecting a "very busy" 2022 for the construction industry. Anirban Basu, chief economist for the Associated Builders and Contractors, and CEO of consulting firm Sage Policy Group, shared his economic forecast on December 8th, noting, "I think that 2022 is going to be a very busy year".

PwC's 2022 outlook for the AEC sector, released on December 9th, found that the industry is well-positioned for the coming year, despite supply chain disruptions, high material costs, workforce concerns and labor shortages. The report showed that 2021 M&A volume actually outpaced pre-pandemic levels across the AEC sector by 14%. Economists also expect the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act to start having a noticeable impact on the construction industry in the second half of 2022.

The Commercial Construction Index (CCI) feel slightly from Q3 to Q4 by 1 point. One of the key drivers of the index- backlog - improved slightly, with revenue and new business confidence drivers dipping marginally. Workforce stability, supply chain issues, transportation costs and material availability linger among the biggest concerns in the industry as we head into the new year.

During Q4, we continued to see signs of a steady recovery and positive demand trajectory. Bid activity and project releases have continued to reflect an increasing demand for high-end façades and complex jumbo glass applications, and we expect this trend to continue through 2022 and beyond.
