Change in news leadership and reduction in workforce at the Poughkeepsie Journal

The Poughkeepsie Journal's parent company, Gannett Co. Inc., is cutting an undisclosed number of positions across its publishing operations.
Those cuts include seven full-time Poughkeepsie Journal Media employees who were laid off Tuesday, including Executive Editor Stu Shinske, according to Jim Fogler, president of Poughkeepsie Journal Media.
"This is a really tough day for seven of our truly committed people, their families and co-workers," said Fogler. "These are individuals - including our passionate and dedicated executive editor - who have contributed a great deal to our media company and our local community."
Shinske came to the Journal in 1989 as deputy city editor and became news editor in 1994, and then, in 1996, managing editor.
In 2001, Shinske moved to another Gannett paper, the Courier-Post at Cherry Hill, N.J., as the managing editor. In May 2005, he became executive editor of the Norwich Bulletin.
He returned to the Journal in December 2006 and over the next decade led the Journal through numerous transitions, while maintaining high standards of journalism and community service. He spearheaded the development of community events, such as the Lyme disease and heroin forums and oversaw development of award-winning series and investigations.

GateHouse owner bucks plummeting revenue trend while Gannett stumbles

The contrasting tale of two companies was reflected in market reaction, with Gannett stock down more than 13 percent in early afternoon trading and New Media up roughly 5 percent.
Gannett recorded a rare net operating loss of $24.2 million for the quarter on revenues of $772.3 million, though that was partly explained by costs of absorbing recent acquisitions.
CEO Bob Dickey acknowledged punishing national advertising losses - down 30.6 percent on a same property basis compared to the period a year ago - and preprinted inserts down 19.6 percent.
Various digital operations including marketing service ventures are growing well - but not enough to offset the print and preprint declines.
Also Gannett has long owned a group of regional papers (NewsQuest) in the UK. Its financials have been dragged down with the weakened pound and advertiser caution post-Brexit.
Over at New Media, growth in digital marketing and subscription revenues mostly covered ad revenue losses. National advertising is not as big a factor as at Gannett, but CEO Mike Reed said that preprints took a hit, down year-to-year by nearly 10 percent.
New Media's mix of properties is mostly small and mid-sized, and Reed said that its two biggest papers, the Columbus Dispatch and Providence Journal, are faring worse than the rest in ad declines.

New Media Investment Group Acquires Rochester Business Journal
From Editor & Publisher - New Media Investment Group Inc. has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Rochester Business Journal Inc., publisher of the Rochester Business Journal (RBJ).
Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, a merger and acquisition firm based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, represented New Media in the sale. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
For nearly three decades, the Rochester Business Journal has served as the dominant source of local business news and information. More than 72,000 area executives go to the RBJ first for coverage of the people and companies that drive economic growth in the Rochester-Finger Lakes region of New York. The RBJ's award-winning editorial staff has been cited for excellence in reporting on health care, technology and small business.
"I am excited that New Media sees the value in what we've created," said Susan Holliday, RBJ president and publisher. "They are a growing company doing many exciting and innovative things, and I believe they will be a good fit for the RBJ organization."
RBJ will become part of BridgeTower Media, the business publication platform of New Media Investment Group. Other New Media properties in the Rochester area include the Daily Messenger in Canandaigua and the Messenger Post weeklies and Daily Record in Rochester.

On sexism in the media
It surprises me that there are still so many stories that I would see at the Times that, if it was about a woman at the top of business, would always describe her clothes, especially shoes. There'
s an obsession with shoes and heels that go, "Click, click, click."
It's not like I feel there should be strict rules, and you should never be able to describe someone, whether a man or a woman, or anybody's clothes. Sometimes it's revealing, and important to talk about it, but you have to demonstrate in your writing why you're bringing it up, why it's emblematic and important. That's rarely done.
I'm surprised that so many stories are still written that seem so stereotypical when women are the subjects, and that editors don't immediately edit it out. There were too many regrettable times at The New York Times when something went into print, and then you would get an avalanche of reader revulsion.

The journalism industry is changing quickly. And journalism schools often are slow to catch up.
That's according to Jeff Jarvis, the director of the
Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. At many journalism schools, Jarvis said, it can take three years to get a new course into the curriculum. For an industry that can be shaken up over the course of a few months, that's eons.
"Journalism education has to get very good at change. Rapid change," Jarvis said. "The field is changing very quickly and we have to keep up with it."
Jarvis and CUNY will have plenty of help navigating the ever-shifting business of journalism. This morning, the Knight Foundation
announced that it will continue its support of the Tow-Knight Center with $3.5 million in new funding. The center's other primary funder, the Tow Foundation, is also continuing its support after helping found the center six years ago.
The Tow-Knight Center will use the money to continue its work of fostering entrepreneurial journalism, identifying major trends shaping the news business and staying on top of the skills students need to get a job in journalism.
