Clarendon Hills Middle School Enjoys Tuneful Tuesday
CHMS Band Director Rich Lehman put together "Tuneful Tuesday" for CHMS students — a compilation of students and staff musicians playing songs of a different theme.

Mr. Lehman said he hopes to continue this through the end of the school year. This recent Tuneful Tuesday video is rock/pop inspired. Click the image to play!
Hinsdale Middle Schoolers Earn First in Environmental Video Contest
HMS students received first prize in The Environmental Film competition sponsored by the Redford Center. The students, Sara Malysz, Adhvay Arvind, Lana Almansoori, and Isla Prame created a film to tell an environmental story important to them: waste management in school cafeterias and their goal to minimize styrofoam waste.

After speaking with the head of D181's food service provider, Quest, and D181 Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia, they found that the best solution was to switch from styrofoam trays to reusable plastic trays and paper plates in the cafeteria. The documentation of this process was captured in their film, " One Step Closer. "

The students spent hours writing the script, conducting the interviews, creating the animation, and capturing and editing all of the footage. Teacher Theresa McGee and Jane Fetty said they could not be prouder of their efforts and the final result. Students were told they won the top prize during a Zoom meeting (pictured above) with their teachers, Dr. Garcia, Alex Schulze (co-founder of 4Ocean), and Jill Tidman and David Castro of The Redford Center. The prize is a care package from 4Ocean and a full-day experience at 4Ocean headquarters in Boca Raton, Florida (when it's safe to travel).
Elm Students Virtually Explore Brookfield Zoo
Elm Kindergarten teacher Brenda Sanders and teacher-librarian Susan Petersen are taking Elm kindergarten students on a virtual field trip to the Brookfield Zoo next week! From singing "Wheels on the Bus" while virtually riding the bus to the zoo, to examining a map to determine which animals to visit once they arrive, this will be a fun treat for students and their imaginations.
The interactive slideshow will be played live through a Zoom meeting and was created with resource videos provided by the zoo. Elm also plans to adapt this field trip for first and second grade classes.
Preschool Students Have Fun With Spring Words
Preschool teachers created a week  of vocabulary activities with a set of spring-themed words. Above is 4-year-old preschooler Jojo Phelps after playing a game with the words listening to her sister (first-grader Lulu Phelps) read her a spring story.
Walker School
Walker fifth-graders wrote letters and encouraging cards to health care workers at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital and were featured on WGN News for their good deed! You can watch the clip here.
Walker students participated in the Kids Heart Challenge at the end of February in their P.E. classes. Students learned about heart health and practiced ways to keep their own heart healthy through exercise. Many students also choose to collect money (including their own!) for the American Heart Association and raised $5,788.39. Congratulations to top fundraiser, Kellen Walker, who raised more than $530. Thank you to all of our students, parents, and Walker staff for helping to make the Kids Heart Challenge a success this year!
Madison School
In honor of National Poetry Month (and D181 Spirit Day's Hat Day) Madison teacher Carrie Molinero read a poem to her second-graders with her son as a guest reader.
Monroe School
Monroe students shared pictures to celebrate Earth Day and PTO President Sara Clary compiled this video to share with everyone in Principal Horne's weekly update. Click above to watch!
Oak School
The Oak Kids Care Club donated the $223 they received from the Chipotle Oak dinner/donation night to HCS Family Services to provide food for families in need.
Above is Stan Cook of HCS with Oak Kids Care Club members after their diaper donation earlier this year.
The Lane School
The Lane School staff put together a video of positive messages to share with students as part of Principal Todd's morning announcements video. Click above to watch!
Prospect School
Prospect School band members had their first all-band Zoom meeting! Great to see all our students with their instruments making music!
