A Message from the Vice Chancellor
Hi, Student Affairs Team!
It was wonderful to spend time with so many of you at last week’s Town Hall. One topic I touched on that I think bears repeating is the need to have important conversations about our health and wellness — to acknowledge the environment we are working in and to do everything we can to make sure we all feel supported. Everyone can play a role:
- Ask for help when you need it, knowing that supervisors will be expecting these requests and will try to find a way to accommodate them.
- Take the time you need for yourself to heal and restore.
- If you are a supervisor, make sure you are regularly checking in with the members of your team, addressing ways that you can help staff better manage their workload, prioritize projects and take time off when they need it.
- Support each other and our students to be solution-oriented and to encourage self-agency, faith in our resiliency, and positivity.
I fundamentally believe that positivity and gratitude can be practices that we follow to help ourselves and our colleagues. I want us to focus on ways we can intentionally recognize each other and regularly highlight the great work we’re doing. Feeling supported by our supervisors and our peers helps facilitate the important student development work we do.
To help show staff appreciation, we have introduced a “Kudos” section of the newsletter, and I hope you will regularly send in your staff "thank you" notes so that we can highlight them here. I’m happy to say that when we asked for your staff recognition notes at the end of the Town Hall, we received 19 responses! A couple are highlighted below and the rest can be seen here.
Thanks for all you do, and if you have other ideas for how we can better contribute to staff health and wellness, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
