Message from the Vice President
Dr. Scott during Campus Safety Walk.
Dear Student Affairs Colleagues,
Last night, I had the opportunity to join campus partners and student volunteers in conducting the annual Campus Safety Walk. In my fourth year participating in the event, I continue to be grateful for the many student volunteers who choose to spend their evening spotting critical campus safety and accessibility issues to be slated for resolution.
The existence of, and strong participation in, this event is a clear indication that there continues to be interest and momentum in continuously improving our campus and ensuring that it is a welcoming place. From physical infrastructure to campus culture, our priority as a division is to create a space where every student has the opportunity and support to succeed. I hope you’ll take the opportunity to learn more about Campus Safety Week and the remaining opportunities to be engaged.
With appreciation,
Eric

Campus Safety Week Sept. 7-13
|
Campus Safety Week is an event held annually in September as part of National Campus Safety Awareness Month, a declaration unanimously approved by Congress in 2008 to encourage a public conversation on important and guiding topics in the prevention of violence at our nation’s colleges and universities.
National Campus Safety Awareness Month is also a time when The University of New Mexico community comes together to conduct workshops and other activities throughout the week that are designed to bring more awareness and education to safety- and security-related topics affecting UNM students, faculty, staff and the campus community at large.
This year, UNM’s annual Campus Safety Week runs Sunday, Sept. 7-13 with Central Campus Safety Day set for Tuesday, Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

UNM Digital Accessibility Committee works to support compliance with new Title II ADA rule
| |
|
Digital accessibility is no new practice for The University of New Mexico, and now a federal ruling is bringing positive change to public universities nationwide.
On April 24, 2024, the Department of Justice (DOJ) published a new rule on digital accessibility under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This rule requires that all web materials and mobile apps used by public entities at federal and state levels, including colleges and universities, be accessible beginning April 24, 2026.
This rule largely works to codify values that UNM has endeavored to represent as part of its mission. Phrases like “Everyone’s a Lobo” and “Each of Us Defines All of Us” are core to our community. Those phrases will now echo into UNM's digital touch points, from publishing accessible course materials, to blogs, to videos and images on social media to all other digital interactions with the University. UNM will continue to prioritize individuals with accessibility needs as a key aspect of its digital discourse and services.
