Message from Rosa Isela Cervantes,

Director, El Centro de la Raza

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we are reminded of El Centro’s vision: cultivating positive change through education and culture. Since its founding in 1969, El Centro has been a home away from home for students, strengthening academic success, cultural pride, and community connection.

This month, and every month, we affirm our commitment to inclusion, equity, and the preservation of culture as a source of strength. As César Chávez once said, “Preservation of one’s own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures.” Guided by this spirit, we celebrate diversity as a foundation for leadership, resilience, and hope.

Let us walk forward with open hearts and with comunidad to create new paths rooted in justice, courage, and care. Together, we can continue to shape a future where education, culture, and community thrive.

This year, we kicked off the month by inaugurating El Centro Through Time (photo above), an exhibit showcasing El Centro’s history. We also brought students, staff, faculty, and community together on campus by co-hosting the amazing Lobo y Lowriders event. One of the best comments I heard that day was, “Wow! This is great! Seeing the cars today makes me feel at home. A bit of me and my familia on campus!”
