Message from the Women's Resource Director

Happy Women's History Month from all of us at WRC!

Since our founding in 1972, as one of the first campus-based women’s centers in the country, we are proud to nurture and empower feminist leaders.  We have an amazing, vibrant, wildly dedicated team of students and staff working at the center right now. A major focus of our teamwork this past year has been to raise the bar for the resources offered to student families at UNM as well as for the violence prevention and advocacy we offer to our community. We want our campus to be welcoming and safe for children and uplifting for their resilient parenting students.

Women’s History Month reminds us continually of the watershed power of speaking up about abuse. As Chanel Miller wrote in her memoir, Know My Name, “We don’t fight for our own happy endings. We fight to say you can’t. We fight for accountability. We fight to establish precedent. We fight because we pray we’ll be the last ones to feel this kind of pain.”

As we hope you all know and trust, supporting survivors and advocating for an end to gender-based violence is what drives our persistence in our work year after year. Visible support and solidarity for survivors means so much at this moment in our culture. While the process of seeking safety and justice remains treacherous for every person brave enough to break their silence about gender-based violence and relationship abuse, we are committed to walking alongside and clearing the path wherever we can.

With love and resilience,

Áine McCarthy and WRC Team
