Communication Studies Senior Awarded $1,000 Scholarship

A communication studies senior, Zane Landin, was awarded the Public Relations Society of America, Los Angeles Chapter Scholarship of $1,000. Zane will be recognized at the PRISM Awards on Thursday, October 21, at the Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica.

Professor Beverly Speak was one of the thousands across the country to participate in the Women’s March on October 3, 2021. Speak, a lecturer in the Masters of Public Administration program in the Department of Political Science, was a speaker at the Claremont Women’s March, alongside elected representatives and local activists.

CCEP Launches "Securing Justice" Podcast

The California Center for Ethics and Policy has launched its podcast, "Securing Justice." The podcast focuses on housing insecurity and aims to examine how housing insecurity is experienced by different communities and consider solutions.
From artists and activists to philosophers and policy wonks, the series will provide listeners with a varied and nuanced look at how housing insecurity affects the lives of Californians and what we - and you - can do about it.

Come to Stammtisch (German Table), a weekly meetup for chatting about anything and everything German. Find friends to visit an Oktoberfest with, get help with homework, learn more about traveling to and studying in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, or chat about whatever you like in German. Lorena Turner, a lecturer in the Department of Communication, co-authored and published the book "Louder Than Words" with communication alumnus Alan Reyes. The book discusses visual communication and public relations. It acknowledges the convergence of graphic design and the field of public relations. It also discusses public relation theories, graphic design history, and the fundamentals of creating projects in visual communication.

Dr. Alex Madva, professor of Philosophy, co-edited the book "The Movement for Black Lives: Philosophical Perspectives." The book explores the philosophical themes related to the Movement for Black Lives, ranging from language, social, and political, race, gender and punishment. A must read for those in the humanities and social sciences. The book was listed as #1 on the Amazon Philosophy new releases. You can buy a copy online at Amazon.

Dr. Whitney Mannies, a lecturer in the Department of Political Science, co-edited the article "Persia and the Enlightenment." The piece discusses ways in which Persia influenced the European identities and "throws new light on the complexity of intercultural encounters and their impact on the shaping of collective identities."

Department of History lecturer Dr. Stephen Campbell's article "A Very Large Extent of Virgin Land: Nicholas Biddle, Cotton, and the Expansion of Slavery" was published in The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography. The article focuses on the era's antebellum tax credit and how "Biddle and his business partners provided financing for, functioned within, and extracted profits from a region that depended to a significant extent on the commodification of land, cotton, and slaves."
