BUILDING AWARENESS

As October comes to a close, we take a moment to reflect on the importance of mental health awareness and support. Throughout the month, many schools and organizations across Southern Oregon and beyond have highlighted resources, shared stories, and encouraged conversations around mental well-being. While October may be designated for mental health awareness, substance use prevention, and bullying prevention, the commitment to fostering supportive environments for students, educators, and families continues year-round. Here are some helpful resources for those efforts:

New resources and professional learning opportunities from ODE


Substance Use Prevention and Intervention

ODE has new resources available to support school districts in proving comprehensive substance use prevention and intervention services. This Substance Use Prevention Education website has resources to address Substance Abuse Disorder (SUD). The Quick Start Guide provides an introduction and helps audiences access and navigate the resources.

Transformative SEL

Transformative Social and Emotional Learning: Oregon’s Transformative SEL Framework is intended to enact ORS 329.045 and help build capacity for strengthening equity-focused school cultures that support student and adult wellbeing. A focus on Transformative SEL enables students and adults to be affirmed in their identities, where they can develop a sense of agency and belonging, engage in collaborative problem-solving, and deepen their curiosity about the kind of society they want to make a reality.


ODE has developed new resources at Instructional Frameworks Website for Transformative SEL to support the implementation of Oregon’s Transformative SEL Framework and Standards. The Quick Start Guide provides an introduction and helps audiences access and navigate the resources.



MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES

Supporting student mental health is a shared responsibility, and timely access to resources can make a meaningful difference. Whether a student is experiencing stress, identity-related challenges, or a deeper mental health concern, the following county specific hubs have up to date community resources and services for educators, youth, and families to find help:

  • Jackson County | Jackson Youth System of Care - Connects youth and families to coordinated services that address mental health and wellness in Jackson County.
  • Josephine County | EASA - Delivers resources to support families, early intervention for young people showing signs of serious mental health conditions, and helping prevent long-term impacts.
  • Klamath Basin Behavioral Health - Offers comprehensive mental health services tailored to the needs of children and adolescents in Klamath County.

The School Safety and Prevention System is designed to provide school districts with a multi-tiered system of supports ranging from curriculum-based universal prevention programs, to safety-based crisis interventions. The SBHW team is available to support with:

Youth SAVE Training (Suicide Assessment in Various Environments)

Recommended for all school staff involved in Adi’s Act implementation, especially behavioral health staff and administrators. Join Lucina and Mary Massey for this live virtual training designed to equip educators with tools to assess, screen, and support youth experiencing suicidal thoughts. Substance Use Prevention Training: Learning to Support Students Through Substance Use Education

Creating safe, inclusive school environments means equipping educators with the tools to support students facing substance use challenges. This professional learning opportunity highlights key topics including Oregon laws, health standards, and developmentally appropriate approaches to substance use education. Participants will also explore strategies for supporting students in recovery and fostering a culture of care and belonging.

Emotional CPR (eCPR)

Emotional CPR (eCPR) training opportunity: Specialized emotional CPR training is now available for individuals interacting with clients, family, coworkers, or community members. This 12-hour certified course is designed to help individuals assist others through emotional crises, providing essential emotional support and guidance during difficult moments. Participants will learn how to share stories, listen actively and provide emotional support.

Trauma Informed Oregon (TIO Trainings)

TIO is a centralized source of information and resources for trauma-informed efforts in multiple networks and systems, including housing, culturally specific care, mental health, education, juvenile justice, substance use treatment, and others.



Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) Training

  • Parent Classes: These sessions are offered at no cost and occur once a week for eight weeks for families across Oregon. For more information, please visit The Riverview Center for Growth.
  • Essential Foundations Training (formerly called Tier 1): A 15-hour training on using empathy-driven technique to address challenging behaviors in children. Register here.


Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) Learning Collaborative


Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Training (TF-CBT)

  • Training to support children and adolescents dealing with trauma. Prerequisite Course: $35, 11 Continuing Education Units. Free for OHA-sponsored participants; $500 for others.

Nurtured Heart Approach (NHA) Trainings

  • NHA is strength-based model for engaging with youth and their families. It is utilized by parents, teachers and therapists as a powerful set of tools to help children with difficult and intense behaviors.

SBHW SUPPORTS AND SERVICES

The Student Behavioral Health and Wellness team at SOESD provides targeted student services that build essential social-emotional and behavioral skills through direct support and individualized coaching. We also collaborate with school staff to design effective interventions, improve systems of care, and align practices with Oregon’s transformative SEL standards—ensuring every student has the support they need to succeed.


Direct Student Services

  • Targeted instruction in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making
  • 1:1 behavior skills coaching
  • De-escalation intervention
  • Function-based intensive intervention for severe behavioral challenges 
  • 1:1 counseling 
  • Goal setting and educational/post-secondary planning


Indirect, Consultation, and System Improvement Services

  • Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments
  • Create and Update Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)
  • Support behavioral health prevention and postvention efforts on campus
  • Refer and connect students and families to community-based resources and higher levels of care
  • Coordinate data-driven, collaborative decision making with staff and stakeholders to meet identified SEL school improvement priorities
  • Provide training and implementation coaching of: 
  • BIP implementation, 
  • behavioral data tracking and progress monitoring, 
  • behavioral interventions, strategies, and tools/resources
  • evidence-based SEL principles and practices
  • creating environmental conditions that foster learning and well-being
  • integrating SEL into academics, classroom routines, and systems of support
  • curriculum, instruction, and assessment to meet Oregon transformative social emotional learning standards
