Introduction to the Program

Thank you to the many students and parents who attended our virtual meeting on Monday. I did want to go over a few of the things mentioned for those who missed the meeting.

GRADUATION - APRIL 19 - Johns Creek High School Auditorium 5:30 - 7:30 pm
Do I have to attend? No, your class will be introduced and a group photo will be taken at this event, but it is certainly not a requirement. It is a great opportunity to see what the other classes have been up to in their first and second year of Student Leadership and I do hope to see you there.

What is next? Your next official meeting will be on August 5th for our Escape Room kick-off event. You will be broken into your respective groups that you will work on your group project with during the year. It is a great opportunity to meet one another and work together on a shared goal. Times will be announced closer to the day and it is approximately a 2-hour commitment of time the Saturday before school starts.

Program Days: you are allowed to miss a total of 2 program days during your time in SLJC. Program days are excused as a field trip at your school - you do have to make up the work, but it is excused in order for you to attend. We have two full days - Government Day where we board a bus and head downtown to visit many important places such as the judicial system, Fulton County Government, the jail (if allowed with COVID) and the State Capitol. We also have a full day at the Johns Creek City Hall learning all about how our city runs day-to-day. Our other program days are at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and typically these will be guest speakers about a variety of topics such as the Leadership Challenge, Colors, Project Management and Financial Awareness.

Secretary of State Ambassadors Program - The SOS team is made up of 9 students in SLJC (4 from the first year and 5 from the second year.) You will have the opportunity to apply in May. This is more of a time commitment as the students are competing with students throughout Georgia for points they gather doing various civic events. The Ambassadors are the face of our program in Johns Creek. They facilitate debates (we have a potential of 4 debates in the coming year), introduce guest speakers, attend various city events and speak at City Council meetings. It does take much more time so be aware of that should you apply.

Group Projects - You will be assigned to a group at the retreat. This is the group that you will work with to select a community project and use SMART goals to see the project to it's conclusion. We have one group project that is available to take on that was begun by a group this year, but will need to be finished up next year. The first group to request this project will be allowed to take it on - I would prefer a Chattahoochee or Northview group to take it - it is to finish up a Gaga Pit at Findley Oaks Elementary that was started by Chattahoochee this year - they will have a plan in place, your team would have to implement the plan and see it to the conclusion. You can find more group projects ideas at our website.

Paperwork and Tuition Payments: You can pay on-line via PayPal at the link provided: TUITION PAYMENT there is a slight charge that we pass on from PayPal. Please make sure that you send in all the required documents even if paying tuition on-line. If you would prefer to mail your paperwork and payment in please send to: 11695 Johns Creek Park, Suite 100 Johns Creek, GA 30097 or bring to graduation on April 19th.

There is a lot of information on the Student Leadership Johns Creek website - check out the class of 2023 group project videos, program day photos and much more. STUDENT LEADERSHIP JOHNS CREEK WEBSITE

Most important piece of advice: Read all the emails I send, this is the best form of communication - it is important that you pay attention to each email. You get out of the program what you put into it - work hard to be the best leader by being involved and interested. Help me get to know you! There is one of me, but 53 of you. Remember there were more students not taken into the program than were accepted - be your very best!

Questions, please don't hesitate to let me know.
