Torkwase Dyson, Robert Gwathmey Chair in Architecture and Art | Exhibition: I Can Drink the Distance

I Can Drink the Distance, a solo exhibition by artist Torkwase Dyson, the Spring 2019 Robert Gwathmey Chair in Architecture and Art at The Cooper Union, considers how the body unifies, balances, and arranges itself to move through built environments. Attuned to the shape patterns of industry-from the history of global trade to contemporary colonization and extraction-Dyson thinks through the various ways humans oppose the violence of these synergistic systems with methods of improvisation and spatial planning.

This exhibition is free and open to the public.

Current Work | Other Tropics, Barclay & Crousse

Sandra Barclay and Jean Pierre Crousse founded  Barclay & Crousse Architecture in 1994 in Paris. Headquartered in Lima since 2006, the studio works on projects that explore the relationship between landscape, climate, and architecture.  The firm's design for a new academic building at the University of Piura won the 2018 Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize.  In 2016, the partners curated the Peruvian Pavilion at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale, which obtained the Special Mention of the jury.

The lecture will be followed by a conversation with architect Stella Betts, a founding partner of LEVENBETTS.

This lecture is co-sponsored with The Architectural League of New York. Tickets are free for Cooper Union students and faculty with valid ID, and League members.
Japan Society Talk| Toshiko Mori: Transforming Communities through Architecture
Moderated by Nader Tehrani

Good design can have a profound impact on local art and communities, as exemplified by the Setouchi region of Japan. In the post-World War II period, there was significant patronage of modern art and architecture in this region. In 1958, Kenzo Tange, whose work combines modern architecture with traditional Japanese techniques and symbolism, designed Kagawa Prefecture's governmental office building. This sparked an artistic renaissance, and the area has become an internationally acclaimed creative hub centered around the Setouchi Art Triennale. At this talk, Prof. Toshiko Mori , founder of Toshiko Mori Architect PLLC and Professor of Architecture at Harvard University, examines this unique artistic and architectural phenomenon. She will also touch on her two projects in villages in Senegal that share a similar ambition to create peace and stability by integrating contemporary architecture with vernacular buildings and local culture. Moderated by Prof. Nader Tehrani , Dean of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union and Principal of NADAAA.

This lecture is offsite and tickets cost $15.
