At a time when there are major humanitarian crises unfolding in multiple spots around the globe, join us as we look back at the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49, the relief operation led by the US and Great Britain to help the 2 and ½ million West Berliners whose access to key goods was cut off by the Soviet Blockade. Against all odds, in an unprecedented operation, the Airlift brought food, coal, medicine and other essential items to the citizens of West Berlin from air bases in Western Germany, flying 110 miles over the Soviet-occupied zone of Germany. The long-lasting impact of the successful Airlift is felt in air traffic control around the world and in US and British relations with Germany to this day.
Short research presentations by students and a 45-minute documentary on the Berlin Airlift will be followed by a reception. Dr. Hope M. Harrison, Professor of History and International Affairs, will introduce and moderate the session.
