Student enrollment down across the country, state and D220
At the Oct. 19 Board of Education meeting, the Board heard an update on student enrollment numbers in Barrington 220. Thirty days into the 2021-22 school year, the district's total enrollment was 8,165 students, which is a decrease from last school year. This downward trend is happening across the country and the state of Illinois. The 30-day enrollment figures are a snapshot in time. Enrollment will fluctuate during the school year as it has in the past and the district will continue to monitor it accordingly. Board approves new Director of Operations
At the Oct. 19 Board meeting, Board members approved the hiring of David Gonzalez as the district's new Director of Operations. The position was vacated in September and is responsible for managing the district maintenance and custodial staff members who provide a physical learning environment that is clean, safe, and well-maintained. Gonzalez comes to Barrington 220 from Waukegan Community School District 60, where he was the Assistant Director of Operations. He began his career in Deerfield Public Schools 109, where he worked as a specialized maintenance worker. He will begin on Nov. 1.
Barrington 220 transportation update
At the Oct. 19 Board meeting, the Board heard an update on district transportation. About 6,200 students across the district are registered for bus transportation, which is provided by law for students who live more than 1.5 miles from their school, as well as students who live less than 1.5 miles from their school, but who face hazardous conditions as determined by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The district's contract with Barrington Transportation Company is currently in its last year and the Board must decide whether or not to extend the contract or go out to bid. The Board will continue its transportation discussion at the next regularly scheduled Board meeting on Nov. 2. Board Secretary recognized for service in public education
During his Superintendent Report at the Oct. 19 Board meeting, Dr. Hunt recognized Board Secretary Barry Altshuler for being named a Master Board Member by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB). Master Board status is earned by attending IASB division meetings, governing meetings, legislative leadership programs, as well as by holding positions of leadership within the IASB. Altshuler joined the Barrington 220 Board of Education in 2019. He currently serves as Board Secretary.
Legislators Virtual Town Hall Forum
In her President Report at the Oct. 19 Board meeting, Sandra-Ficke Bradford mentioned an upcoming event hosted by the Barrington 220 School District, Barrington Chamber of Commerce, and the Barrington Area Council of Governments.
