The Good Karma Cafe at Franklin Upper School began selling coffee and treats to students and staff in October of 2021. The students who run this cafe are part of a New York State Alternative Assessment (NYSAA) career awareness class, where they learn skills they can use after graduating from high school. These students run the cafe daily, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., and serve coffee, muffins, and cookies. Students serve in a variety of roles, including cashier, barista, bakery worker, and greeter.
Students and teachers who run the cafe will be donating $320 dollars to the Open Door Mission in order to supply Thanksgiving meals to the homeless population. Each marking period students will donate money from the sale of items in the cafe to a new charity.
