March/April 2019
Greetings!

As I am sure you know, April is Autism Awareness month, and we've be "lighting it up blue!" all month. Our Autism Awareness Committees on each campus have events planned for the entire month to show our pride.

In exciting development, our  CulinaryAcademy360 (CA360) and FilmAcademy360 (FA360) are now approved to accept "goods and services" funds from individuals who are receiving funds through NJ DDD. This opportunity coincides with our decision to open up these programs to everyone in the community. These CommUNITY Education programs promote diversity and acceptance of all individuals. Now, individuals 16 and older can take advantage of the incredible classes offered by these two programs. Whether exploring a career path or pursuing a hobby, these programs offer exciting options for typically developing individuals as well as those with ASD.  Visit our FilmAcademy360 website or our Culinary Academy360 website for more information.

We are also thrilled to announce that we are now accepting applications for our Academy360 STEAM initiative for classes starting in September 2019.  The Full STEAM Ahead initiative at A360 Lower School and the College and Career (C2) initiative at A360 Upper School were developed for students with autism and related disabilities at, near or above grade level who are underachieving in their current placement due to anxiety, disengagement, bullying, and deficits in the area of self-regulation and executive functioning. For more information about these exciting options, contact Gina Catania, Principal at A360 LS or Lynn Muir, Principal at A360 US.

Happy reading,

Endowing the Future

At Spectrum360, we are always looking towards the future. Over the past several years, we have continued to grow to meet the needs of our expanding population and to provide as many opportunities as possible to help individuals with ASD flourish in the community.

Ensuring that there will always be enough funding to sustain our ability to meet the needs of our community is a continual challenge. Your contribution to our Endowment Fund will help us meet this goal.  Learn more about how an endowment fund works.

Research Roundup

Sleep Disturbance in
Individuals  with Autism

Sleep disturbance affects many individuals with ASD across their lifetimes.  Poor sleep patterns can begin in childhood and continue into adulthood.  This issue impacts not just the individual but the rest of their family as well.

Research shows that between 44 and 86% of children with ASD have serious problems with sleep, and many adults are impacted as well.  Lack of sleep has a major impact on the quality of the individual's life.

For a few strategies on improving sleep patterns, see our blog post, Ask the BCBA: 3 Strategies for Addressing Sleep Difficulties.

Sleep concerns are one of three common challenges that our free upcoming Spectrum of Options Seminar  Sensory Issues Affecting Health and Wellbeing: Food Issues, Dentistry & Sleep will address. Join us on May 14th to learn some strategies from the experts. This seminar is open to families and professionals in the community and provides general CEU's if needed.

NOTE:  Check out the full issues of Spectrum360 Research Roundup! Published monthly and now available on our blog, it is a curated synopsis of emerging research about autism and related disabilities with links to the articles.

Perspective

From the Employer's Point of View: Working with our CBWE Students

It all started with an email from Carole Voltz, Office Manager at Caldwell Pediatric Therapy Center complimenting one of the Job Coaches in our Academy360 Upper School Community Based Work Experience Program. Of course we wanted to know more, so we reached out to Carole to learn more about her experience.

Making the Most of  a Trip to Costco
(and other stores)

Community Based Instruction is a regular activity at both Academy360 Upper and Lower Schools. Visiting stores, restaurants, and other businesses helps our students learn to navigate the community. A recent trip to Costco by A360 Upper School students prompted our Speech and Language Therapist, Barb Lanigan, to create a list 15 different teaching opportunities that families can also use when visiting Costco and other stores.
