--ABOUT THE MUSEUM—
Studio Museum promotes and showcases work by Black Americans and other artists of African descent. A cultural institution in Harlem, the museum has offered residencies, exhibitions, and events that have helped launch the careers of leading American artists, curators, and writers.
From humble beginnings, in 1968 - 57 years ago, it opened in a drafty rented loft space over a liquor store on upper Fifth Avenue, just north of 125th Street.
It eventually located to its current address on 125th Street.
The original building needed repairs. Instead of repairing, the building was demolished and a new, 82,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art building was erected in its place.
With a cost of over $160 million and construction that spanned seven years
the Museum celebrated its grand-reopening this year.
The building inside and out is stunning, breath-taking.
Presented on 6 floors, the display of art and artifacts is wide and varied.
--GETTING THERE--
Take the 9:39 a.m. Metro-North train from Saugatuck
or the 9:33 a.m. train from Greens Farms.
(This train is off-peak fare; half-price for seniors.)
Exit the train at Harlem - 125th Street Station.
Scheduled arrival is 10:43 a.m. We’ll meet in the Waiting Room on the street level.
(Use the stairs at the north end of the platform.)
After a short four-block walk, we’ll arrive when the museum opens at 11:00 a.m.
We’ll return to Connecticut from the Harlem – 125th Street Station.
--ADMISSION--
Admission is $9 for those over 65 and $25 for younger.
Pay at the door by credit card.
--LUNCH--
We’ll make a group reservation to dine at Sylvia's or the Red Rooster.
Please indicate when you reserve if you will be joining us for lunch.
