At our Alumni Clinical Weekend (November 10-12), we had the distinct honor of hosting the irrepressible and brilliant Dr. Ed Calabrese in our class. A Professor of Toxicology at UMass Amherst, Dr. Calabrese pretty much single-handedly sheds light on the compelling topic of hormesis, defined as a
non-linear dose response, characterized by low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition. Historically, dose-responses have been thought to occur in a linear fashion from low-dose to high. When a handful of studies were not enough to prove hormesis, Calabrese did more. When colleagues claimed that "toxicology worships at the altar of mechanism," he went after mechanism.
Dr. Ed Calabrese Lecturing on Hormesis at NESH Clinical Class
Keeping an open mind, being dispassionate about results, integrating feedback, and remaining unbiased all help advance scientific discovery. Dr. Calabrese's ongoing work will impact environmental policy, understanding of biology, the pharmaceutical industry and medicine for years to come. Hopefully researchers and policy makers will take note to further elucidate the relevance of the hormetic response.
Many in the world of homeopathy appreciate Dr. Calabrese first of all, because our understanding of mechanism of action of homeopathy will be informed by his research. See his recent Guest Editorial in Homeopathy.
Beyond that, he has spent a career in a setting that is often inhospitable or disrespectful, but his clear and strong dedication to finding and sharing the truth, based on his scientific experiments, is inspiring. We hope you will come study with us and keep this conversation going.

For some immediate information for you & your patients, find below a piece on hip replacement, something we increasingly come across in family, friends, and patients and for which we have so much to offer.
Counting our many blessings at this time of year. A peaceful and healthy holiday season to all!

Destination - Vancouver, BC Canada
For the first time, Drs. Paul Herscu and Amy Rothenberg offer the NESH 8 Weekend Develop Expertise in Homeopathy Course in Vancouver, BC. They are looking forward to an excuse to visit this robust and diverse city every other month beginning January 2018.
Known for its amazing scenery, Vancouver is a city which certainly takes advantage of its geographic location. Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Coastal Mountain range offers a cityscape with a stunning backdrop. While just minutes north of Downtown Vancouver, the North Shore Mountain range enjoys ski resorts and spectacular views back towards the city and beyond. Makes sense it's often voted a best city in the world to live!

Getting Hip? (Replacement!)
Homeopathy & natural medicine helps relieve pain, supports patients through surgery, and helps get patients back up and running.
by Amy Rothenberg ND
When I was in naturopathic medical school in the early 1980s, it was uncommon for me to hear about patients having hip replacement surgery. Now it seems as common as getting your tires changed!
In fact, total joint replacement (hip or knee) has become one of the most frequently performed surgeries in the U.S. and the most common surgery covered by Medicare. Researchers say that in 2010 there were 2.5 million people living with artificial hips, and that number has surely risen by now. As baby boomers grow older and live longer, hip replacements will become ever more commonplace. So it's nice to know that homeopathy, alongside other naturopathic approaches, can be used to good effect to support hip replacement patients - before surgery, immediately afterwards, and during the rehabilitation process - to help ensure the procedure is as successful as possible.

Once again you can purchase homeopathic remedy kits available to our NESH community at discounted prices! NESH does not benefit financially from these sales, but for those who'd like to add a compact kit to your pharmacy, these are an excellent value.
This gift giving season consider Emergency Kits for your family and friends. "The Emergency kit has saved our vacations by keeping our family out of the Emergency Room," says one NESH alum. Does your extended family live a distance away but they call you for health help? Provide easy remedy access to them for these situations. The NESH community kit sale runs through early December. Make sure your family stays well in 2018!! Call to order for study groups too.
