Studying at NESE on a Business or Tourist Visa

As most of you probably know, the United States government has paused the issuance of student visas (F-1). Of course, this is extraordinarily frustrating for everyone in international education, and NESE certainly hopes that this pause is a short one. On the positive side, NAFSA1, one of the professional organizations to which NESE belongs, posted the following statement,

"On May 29, a Department of State spokesperson indicated during a press briefing that the pause would be brief: '...there is an endpoint, and it should be rather quick, as consulates and embassies make adjustments when it comes to how they handle visas.’"

In the meantime, we wanted to remind everyone that it is legal to study up to 18 hours per week on both a tourist visa (B2) and a business visa (B1). This is called “part-time” study. However, and this is very important to note, if you enter the United States on a B1/B2 visa, your studies CANNOT be the main purpose of your visit. Tourism or business must be the main purpose.

Many language schools, including NESE, have received students on B1/B2 visas for many years. Most NESE students who attend NESE on B1/B2 visas usually take the first two classes each day: 9:00-10:30 Grammar & Idioms + 11:00-12:30 Conversation & Listening. Of course, you can choose any one - or two - of the NESE classes that take place between 9:00-3:15. The price for one class is $758 for each 4-week session, and the price for two classes is $1460 for each 4-week session. Please see the daily schedule at the end of this newsletter.

Housing and all NESE activities are open to part-time NESE students, and so we invite you to improve your English while enjoying the beautiful New England summer:

NESE students, teachers, and staff come from over 100 countries. We belong to every major religion, almost every ethnic group, and have all levels of ability and disability. Despite great differences between us, NESE remains committed to more than simply teaching English; we have always been - and will always remain - committed to lessening hatred, intolerance, and discrimination against everyone. When students finish their studies at NESE, they leave not only convinced that their English has improved, but also convinced that we are all part of one human race, united by our respect for one another.
