A message from our director


The start of a new academic year is always a bit of a whirlwind, and this fall has been no exception. Between conferences and community events, we’ve published new papers and are gearing up for an exciting new research study funded by the National Institutes of Health. We’ll be looking at connections in the brain that you can think of as being like a fingerprint—they’re unique to every person and could be why stuttering presents differently in different people. This is a new direction in the field of stuttering research, and we can’t wait to see what discoveries await! 


It was wonderful to see so many members of our stuttering community come together to celebrate one another and build meaningful connections at our Stuttering Awareness Day Celebration recently (learn more about International Stuttering Awareness Day). If you missed it, there are some lovely photos from the event below. We’re looking forward to this year’s Stuttering Symposium on December 5th (save the date!) and, as always, our monthly stuttering support group is available for those who want to connect with other people who stutter.  


As ever, I must extend a huge thank you to you! Our lab couldn’t make groundbreaking discoveries without your steadfast support and contributions to research. Publications

New publication in Neurobiology of Language


Dr. Fiona Höbler, Dr. Yanni Liu, Mike Angstadt, and Dr. Soo-Eun Chang are among the lab's co-authors in a new paper, The speech network in childhood stuttering: differences in functional connectivity of the planning and motor loops, published in Neurobiology of Language. The paper summarizes key findings showing differences inside the brains of children who stutter and those who don't. These differences occur inside brain connections that are essential for speech planning and execution.

New publication in Journal of Communication Disorders


Dr. Soo-Eun Chang is co-author of a new paper in the Journal of Communication Disorders. The article, Stuttering treatment goals beyond fluency: A non-Western perspective, shares the results of a survey of speech-language pathologists in South Korea. This survey measured how clinicians in a non-Western culture approach the treatment of stuttering as well as how their own beliefs about the condition shape those treatment options.

Monthly Stuttering Support Group

In partnership with the Ann Arbor Stuttering Awareness and Research Club (A2STAR ⭐) at the University of Michigan, we co-host monthly support group meetings open to teens and adults who stutter. If you'd like to be part of the group, please fill out our interest form, and we'll get in touch with details.

Participate in our research


Are you or someone you know interested in participating in stuttering research? We are searching for participants of all ages to help us with our research studies and would love your help spreading the word. Our study procedures include surveys, speech and language screenings, and non-invasive brain activity recordings using electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our participants are compensated for their time and are helping to advance the field of stuttering research!


Looking for more paid research opportunities?


The University of Michigan's Conceptual Development Lab is interested in learning more about what children understand about COVID-19 transmission and illness as well as how parents and children learn about viruses together.
