NEW WEBSITE COMING SOON

We've been working hard to create a new and improved church website and we're finally ready to go live with it. While this transfer is taking place, our old website will be down. Should this continue through the weekend, please use this eNewsletter to access all the information and links you need to stay plugged in. If you need any additional information, please email admin@staopen.org. Thank you for your patience.

ST. ANDREW'S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 101

You may have questions about what it means to be Presbyterian, from the St. Andrew’s perspective? How is the church organized and who makes decisions? How can we support your personal spiritual growth?

Using the “101” nomenclature from college introductory courses, Rev. Carol Johnson is offering a series of three 1-hour classes to help answer these questions. This offering will be on Monday at 7pm, via Zoom, July 15th, 22nd and July 29th. We plan to repeat this offering at other times during the year. You may attend any one or all sessions. Feel free to pick up a session you have missed during other times this is offered.

  • July 29th: What … What do you believe and how can we help you? We will help you draft your own statement of faith.

Call or email Carol Johnson for questions at ckjaustin@gmail.com or

512-694-9705. The Zoom link for this class is listed below.

Are YOU registered to vote? Are you SURE?

If you have moved since your previous registration you might not be registered any more. If you have had a name change -- that could complicate things (the ID you present to vote must match the registration info). This website:

https://teamrv-mvp.sos.texas.gov/MVP/mvp.do lets you check your standing, and it will guide you through online steps to register or to change your name or address if you need to.

PUPPET SHOWS on YouTube

Who here lives for our weekly puppet shows? Mr. Monkey does! Thanks to our fabulous Administrative Assistant, Gloria Vasquez, the St. Andrew's puppet show now has its own tab in our YouTube Channel.

Now the young at heart can easily watch back-to-back shows by clicking on this link: https://www.youtube.com/@St.AndrewsPresbyterianChurch/playlists

You can help us spread our virtual reach by doing two simple things next time you're in YouTube:

1. Subscribe to our YouTube channel. It doesn't cost a cent, but it tells YouTube that you think we're worth watching. If we can gain more subscriptions, YouTube will suggest our videos to others who are searching for similar content. Just click on the black 'Subscribe' button.

2. 'Like‘() and comment something affirming when you do watch one of our videos. This also helps us gain traction. With your help, Mr. Monkey may go viral!

Request from our FOOD & DIAPER PANTRY

Hi friends. As you may have heard, St. Andrew's had a record breaking 247 families at the last food pantry. On top of that, the Austin Diaper Bank (who supplies us with diapers) is experiencing a summer shortage, so the problem has trickled down to all the distributing agencies like St. Andrew's.

Tina and I are hoping that some of you will consider buying a package (or two) of diapers to help us meet the need at our next food pantry. The most economical option is HEB brand diapers. We have listed the specific sizes that are most needed below.

Size 3 (about 14¢ ea): 625 needed

Size 5 (about 18¢ ea): 1250 needed

Size 6 (about 21¢ ea): 1125 needed

Size 4T/5T (about 32¢ ea): 70 needed

If you do purchase diapers, please leave them inside St. A's front door on the wooden benches, or on some of the empty racks inside the food pantry. Thank you so much for your consideration!

ARTE DE LAGRIMAS: Refugee Artwork Project Celebration

We will have the opportunity to explore the cultures of the refugees who are migrants, asylum seekers and refugees along the Texas-Mexico border. Artwork prepared by these people will be displayed in August, and a panel discussion of the art will be available during the three-week showing. This event is sponsored by the Arte de Lagrimas: Refugee Artwork Project as a part of their tenth year of activist work, with the hope of healing our society’s hatred for these immigrants.

This special anniversary art exhibit will be held at La Peña Gallery (Austin, 8 blocks from the Texas Capitol). The celebration will consist of an art exhibit opening reception August 10, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by a panel discussion event on the artwork on August 17, 2024. The art exhibition will be open for public viewing until August 31, 2024.

LOVE MOTHER EARTH

It takes 1.5 billion barrels of oil, enough to run 100,000 cars for a whole year, to make the 22 billion plastic water bottles American throw away every year. Bottled water processing also wastes water, up to 2 gallons for every gallon bottled. And since only 10 to 12 percent of water bottles are recycled, the rest end up in landfills, along road sides or bobbing in rivers and lakes, where they take thousands of years to decompose. The solution?

A reusable bottle! Models that come with their own filters, replaceable after multiple uses, are available from various websites and sporting goods stores.
