Queremos mejorar nuestras Iglesias? Necistamos darles un mejor servicio a nuestros vecinos. Queremos reformar la Iglesia luterana? Necisitamos reformar nuestras servicios a nuestros vecinos.

*The following is a transcript of Bishop Brenda's video (above).
Hello, this is Bishop Brenda Bos and for Reformation Day, I want to address you in Spanish. 500 years ago Martin Luther could not have imagined all the different languages which would be spoken by Lutherans. We know he thought it was important for masses and the Holy Scriptures to be available in the language of the people.
So today, I am going to try to speak in one of the languages of the people of the Southwest California Synod. In California, 45 percent of the population is Latino. God willing, our future church will reflect our neighborhoods more closely, which will include Latinos. This is the call of the Reformation.

The church of the future must serve our neighbors in meaningful ways. How do we improve our churches? Improve our service to our neighbors. How do we reform our church? Reform our service to our neighbors.

I truly believe God calls us to love our neighbors. My office is inviting you to try new things. We can try those things in our neighborhoods, on our streets, in our schools, even our grocery stores! Of course during the pandemic, it has been hard to get to know each other in person. We can still learn about others in conversation, or even reading books about immigrants, or the poor, or the experience of African Americans or Asian migrants. We have included a list of ideas below. A book study about the experience of others may be a wonderful road forward for your church and your ministry.

The Holy Spirit inspires us to look at the world differently. God can reform our church, even in this time. Nothing is impossible with God. Of course God can do new things during this time. And the church can do new things too. So can people. God’s work happens with our hands.

Your bishop is trying a new thing, speaking in Spanish. Have I made mistakes? Of course. What new things will you try? Maybe you’ll make mistakes, maybe everything will not turn out well: but please try. God is with us, calling us toward this. This is the Reformation. The church is always moving forward. God bless us all.
