Good afternoon


Effective last night, Thursday, May 1, through Monday morning, May 5, and again next weekend, as we slide into place the new Tower Hill Road bridges, Route 1 at the Route 138 interchange in North Kingstown will be down to one lane for a distance of about 1,500 feet before and after the southbound bridge and about 1,000 feet before and after the northbound bridge. Diamond Hill Road and Douglas Pike Bridges over I-295, Cumberland/Smithfield

Although no lane closures are anticipated, crews will continue building walls for the Douglas Pike Bridge along I-295 North and installing rebar for its concrete steps along I-295 South, plus continue excavating along both I-295 North and South at the Diamond Hill Road Bridge.

East Main Road Pavement Improvements, Middletown

Over the next two weeks at this project, motorists can expect lane shifts on East Main Road, from Oliphant Lane to Mitchell’s Lane, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Scheduled operations, anticipated to last through June, will include removing the existing and installing the new concrete curbing, and reconstructing the existing drainage structures.

I-95 15 Bridges, Providence/Cranston/Warwick

Next week at this project, bridge work on both directions of I-95 will require alternating lane closures from Park Avenue to Elmwood Avenue, Sunday-Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

We need to close Exit B/C/D off I-95 North for bridge pier demolition, Saturday night from midnight to Sunday morning at 6 a.m., and Sunday-Thursday nights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Please follow signed detour. As part of this project, motorists can also expect alternating lane closures for sign and barrier installation and milling on both directions of I-95, from Exit 36 to Exit 39, Sunday-Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Little Compton/Tiverton Pavement Improvements 

Shoulder closures are scheduled for sign work along Route 77 (Main Road), from Central Avenue to Bridgeport Road, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Project wide landscaping and removal of existing traffic signal equipment on Main Road at Highland Road has been completed, while retaining wall installation at the back of the sidewalk and drainage work is scheduled along Main Road and Highland Road, respectively.

Route 6/10 Interchange Reconstruction, Providence

We’re applying protective sealer to the median barrier next week at this project. This will require a left lane closure on Route 10 South, from the Atwells Avenue Bridge to the Route 6 East overpass, Monday-Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Route 37 Improvements, Cranston/Warwick/Johnston

Bridge Group 51B: I-295 area

We need to close the ramp from Route 37 East to I-295 North for concrete deck end repairs, Sunday-Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Please follow signed detour. Overhead highway lighting improvements require alternating lane closures on I-295 North, from Exit 3B (Route 37) to Exit 9 (Route 6), Sunday-Tuesday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Alternating lane closures are scheduled for landscaping on I-295 North, from Exit 3B (Route 37) to Exit 9 (Route 6), Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Road construction continues behind barrier with frequent vehicle access in/out of the work zone along I-295 North, in the vicinity of Route 37, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 146 Reconstruction Project, Lincoln/North Smithfield

Alternating lane closures are scheduled for road construction on both directions of Route 146, from Route 116 to Exit 10 (Route 146A), Sunday-Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., and from Exit 10 (Route 146A) to the Massachusetts line, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The west side of Sayles Hill Road, from Route 146 to Iron Mine Hill Road, will also be closed for road construction, and left turns will be prohibited from both directions of Route 146 to Sayles Hill Road, Sunday-Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Please follow signed detours during all closures.

School Street Pavement Improvements, Lincoln

Alternating one-way traffic with frequent vehicle access in/out of the work zone and driveways/walkways blocked are scheduled at this project next week. We’ll be installing temporary water bypass equipment and performing advanced utility work along School Street, from Old River Road to Main Street in Albion, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. In mid-May, we are scheduled to close the road through fall 2026.

Tower Hill Road Bridge and Paving, North/South Kingstown

Motorists are currently experiencing one lane closed in each direction on Route 1, at the Route 138 interchange, while we replace the southbound Tower Hill Road Bridge. This process involves implementing a new temporary traffic pattern, demolishing the existing bridge, moving the new bridge into place, installing precast concrete bridge elements, constructing the new roadway approaches, paving the approaches and bridge, restriping, then reopening all lanes to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday morning, May 8.



Effective Friday, May 2, through Monday morning, May 5, as part of this process, we will also implement some ramp closures. They include the ramps from Route 138 East to Route 1 North, Route 1 North to Route 138 West, Route 1 South to Route 138 East, and the ramp from Route 138 West to Route 1 South.


To prepare for the next extended weekend closure period and bridge move on Thursday night, May 8, crews will focus on bridge and site work. This will involve lane or temporary ramp closures on Route 1, from Shermantown Road to the Route 4 split, Monday-Wednesday nights, May 5-7, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., and behind barrier work with no anticipated lane closures, Monday-Friday, May 5-9, from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Routes 1 and 138 interchange ramps.


Starting Thursday night, May 8, at 9 p.m., we will begin the next extended weekend closure period and bridge move for the northbound Tower Hill Road Bridge. The new northbound bridge is scheduled to be in place by 5 a.m. Monday morning, May 12. During this operation, motorists can anticipate one lane closed in each direction of Route 1, at the Route 138 interchange. Starting Friday May 9, we will also need to close a few ramps through Monday morning at 5 a.m. They include the ramp from Route 138 East to Route 1 North, Route 1 North to Route 138 West, Route 1 South to Route 138 East, and Route 138 West to Route 1 South.

We appreciate the patience of the motoring public throughout this process. Businesses remain open, expect delays, seek alternate routes, and please follow signed detours during all closures.

Warwick Corridor Project

Tonight, Friday, May 2, at 8 p.m., as part of this project, we will install barrier and narrow the lanes along both directions of I-95 at the Route 113 (East Avenue) overpass prior to closing the on-ramp from Route 113 (East Avenue) East to I-95 North. Motorists can expect right and center lane closures for this operation through Saturday morning, May 3 at 4 a.m. While this on-ramp is closed through late fall, motorists are advised to follow the signed detour using the on-ramp to I-95 South, then to the Route 117 interchange (Exit 27A) to reverse direction back to I-95 North.

  

Next week, we plan to install debris shielding requiring alternating lane closures on both directions of I-295 at the East Avenue overpass, Sunday-Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sign work is also anticipated on I-95 at the East Avenue overpass, with right and center lane closures Tuesday night (I-95 North) and Wednesday night (I-95 South) from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., and we plan to install barrier on both directions of I-95 at the East Avenue overpass, with a left lane closure, Thursday night from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.



Alternating lane closures are also scheduled on Route 113 West, from Route 5 to the I-95 North on-ramp and Route 113 East, from Route 2 (Bald Hill Road) to the I-295 South on-ramp, to move barrier and build walls within the median on I-295 and at the east abutment on I-295 North, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Washington Bridge & I-195, East Providence/ Providence

Overnight Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system installation work is scheduled with up to two lanes closed on I-195 West, from the Potter Street overpass to the Gano Street on-ramp, Monday-Thursday nights, May 5-8, from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., and on I-195 East, from Exit 1A to Exit 1 B-C, Sunday-Thursday nights, May 11-15, from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Ongoing bridge maintenance will also require up to two lanes closed on I-195 West, from Broadway to the Gano Street on-ramp, Tuesday and Thursday nights, May 13 and 15, from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.  Weekday SHM work continues under the Washington Bridge with no lane closures, Monday-Friday, May 12-16, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.


Bridge demolition activities continue on portions of the old bridge over the river. In accordance with CRMC guidelines, barges are being used to collect construction debris. Any debris that enters the water will be removed. Barges will then be towed to land for transfer into trucks for offsite disposal. Over the next week, work will progress from the East Providence shoreline area westward toward the center of the river. Demolition work will take place weekdays only from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. No work is currently planned after 4 p.m. to avoid any disruptive noise during evening hours.
