The scholarship recipients are enrolled in HCC’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, which provides courses in the trade industry. Four of the HCC students are enrolled in the school’s welding program, while the other four are taking school courses in the electrician program.
The scholarships will be used to pay for costs associated with attendance, such as tuition, books, and fees. The Submarine Museum Association is considering providing the HCC scholarships on an annual basis.
“Congratulations to all of the scholarship winners,” said Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum executive director Chuck Merkel. “With the high demand for skilled workers at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and in Hawaii’s maritime industry, we wanted to come up with a way to develop students for good-paying local trade jobs here at home. The scholarship program is an important step towards fulfilling that goal, and we are grateful for Honolulu Community College and the University of Hawai‘i Foundation in helping set this up.”
