Ask the Recruiter

Question:

I was just wondering what exactly the recruiters will be looking for when they ask you to submit a photo. What is a person to do who is not photogenic? I went to an open house for an airline and because of the overwhelming outcome of the interviewees we were just asked to leave our resumes and CV. I think my CV was good however my picture.... well not that good, for some reason I don't look like what I look like in a photo in person. I don't think it is fair to judge someone based on that because of the mere fact not everyone photographs well. And I happen to be one of those. Any inputs on this matter would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer:

First of all, not many airlines require that you submit a photograph. We have found that many of the multinational airlines like Emirates require photos, but most of the ones in the US do not.

If the airline does request a photograph along with your application and resume, they will usually specify exactly what they are looking for (full-length, portrait, etc.). An airline will most always ask for a full-length shot so that they can assess your entire appearance. Keep in mind they are not just looking at your face or body. They are also assessing your wardrobe, makeup, accessories, etc.

Unfortunately, most people asked to send a photo of themselves end up having someone take their picture with a digital camera or smart phone. The result is usually very unprofessional.  If you are truly serious about getting a job with the airlines, you should invest some money and hire a professional photographer who can create a very powerful image for you. Discuss with the photographer what you are looking for and show some of the flight attendant photos on the airline's website. Ideally, you should choose a wardrobe for the photograph that closely approximates a flight attendant uniform; most are navy blue or black with a white shirt and matching, conservative tie or other collar accessory. Approximating the airline uniform will allow the interviewer to envision you as a working flight attendant. You should also ask the photographer to shoot both a full body shot and a close-up (portrait). Submit both of these to the airline even if they only ask for one.

Follow the above guidelines and I am sure you will stand out above the competition.

Good luck!
