Preschool Scholarship Program
Reach $1,000,000 Milestone

United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County is recognized by the Department of Community and Economic Development as a Pre-Kindergarten Scholarship Organization. Each year Success By 6 provides tuition assistance so that families may access safe, affordable and high quality preschool programming for their children. Success By 6 is thrilled to announce that, since 2007, we have provided 310 children with this once-in-lifetime learning opportunity and have awarded a total of $1,022,487.00 in preschool scholarships!

The application process for this preschool scholarship program opens July 1 of each year and provides 50% tuition assistance to children, ages 3 to 6 years, who attend an approved Keystone STAR 3 or STAR 4 early childhood center and who are enrolled in a preschool program. Parents must also meet certain income guidelines to be eligible. Additional information can be found at www.uwcarlisle.org .

Funding for this program is provided by local businesses through the Education Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. Business owners who would like to learn more about participating in this program may go to our website at www.uwcarlisle.org .
PPL Electric Utilities Funds
REAL Men Read Program

Success By 6 is grateful to PPL Electric Utilities for funding our REAL Men Read Program for a second year in a row! Once a month, male mentors read to children in early childhood centers. The purpose of this program is to show young children that men are good readers. The program is offered to all preschool children enrolled in Carlisle Early Education Center. PPL provided $2250.00 to support this important initiative.
Carlisle Area Emergency Relief Fund Provides PPE for Early Childhood Centers
Success By 6 applied for and received $4,500 from the Carlisle Area Emergency Relief Fund. The purpose of this grant funding was to provide much needed personal protective equipment (PPE) to early childhood centers as a direct result of COVID-19. Each of the following early childhood centers received $500 of this funding to purchase these critical supplies: Bethel Preschool and Day Care, Bright Beginnings Child Care of Carlisle, Carlisle Early Education Center, Dickinson College Children's Center, Little Lights Learning Center, Noah's Ark Preparatory Center, Wee Little Lambs Early Learning Center, YMCA Family Child Care Center and the YWCA Carlisle Child Care.
Success By 6 Provides Scholarship Assistance
for School Age Child Care

In August, 2020, many public school districts in Cumberland County made the difficult decision to only partially reopen schools for the 2020-2021 school year as a direct result of the COVID-19 public health emergency. No one could have foreseen the devastating extent to which this public health crisis would impact the economic health of our community and the financial constraints the need for school age child care would place on already strapped family budgets. As such, The United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County and its early childhood initiative, Success By 6, identified school age child care as a critical need resulting from this public health crisis and jumped into action.

United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County requested and received $150,000 from the Cumberland County Relief Block Grant to provide up to $36.00 per day for each child to help defray the costs of school age child care for children in kindergarten through grade 5. This grant funding provides tuition assistance to families from September 8 through December 23, 2020. This allowed parents to place their children in PA licensed early child care centers so that they could return to work or remain in the workforce when their children were unable to attend in-person learning at their public elementary school. Success By 6 provided 133 children with this tuition assistance.

We wish to thank the following early childhood centers who accepted this funding on parents’ behalf and who provided a safe and nurturing learning environment for these school age children:
