Last Saturday, on the steps of City Hall, residents, neighborhood leaders, and small business and tenant advocates stood together to call out the lies and hypocrisy behind Senator Wiener’s SB 79, similar to rallies across California.
Based on proximity to transit stops, SB 79 would allow 7–15 story luxury towers across 95% of San Francisco. It strips local control and offers no guarantees of affordability, safety, infrastructure, or even parking.
Our elected leaders are ignoring us.
Backed by powerful interests and billionaire donors, our representatives believe the next election is far enough away that we will forget their betrayal. But the sweeping overhaul of San Francisco’s land use is a generational threat to our neighborhoods, and we will not forget.
Like Mayor Lurie’s extreme upzoning plan, SB 79 will not deliver affordability. Instead, it will displace tenants, drive out small businesses, and destroy the very qualities that make San Francisco livable and beloved, all while handing unprecedented profits to developers and investors. Our state and local leaders have forgotten who they serve.
The full assembly will be voting soon, and if it passes, it goes back to the senate for the final vote. Don't let our state leaders hide behind the excuse that San Francisco is exempt from SB 79 because with Senator Wiener, no exemption lasts. A yes vote is a betrayal.
