Sudbury Foundation Spring Newsletter | | |
Dear Sonia,
At this critical moment, the Sudbury Foundation reaffirms our commitment to strengthening our nonprofit partners who are working to solve some of our community's most pressing social issues. We have been in contact with many of our grantees over the past few months to understand the impact of all the recent changes on both the organizations and their clients.
Since January, we have awarded our first round of grants, selected 15 students for our Atkinson Scholarship program, welcomed a new Trustee, and held the first Sudbury Doing Good Coffee of the year.
Read on for more information and upcoming grant deadlines.
Sincerely,
Sonia Shah
Executive Director

The Atkinson Scholarship Program was established 30 years ago to recognize local students with financial need, academic promise and the capacity to make a meaningful contribution to society.
2025 Atkinson Scholarship recipients have been awarded $7,500 in scholarship assistance and can reapply for support each year of their undergraduate academic career for a total of $30,000 in financial support.
These students were selected because they embody the qualities valued by former Sudbury residents Herbert and Esther Atkinson, who established the Foundation in 1952 and for whom the scholarship is named.
“The Atkinsons were a modest couple who believed in private giving for the public good,” explained Operations Manager Tricia Brunner. “They were particularly interested in helping young people in the community. This year’s recipients were selected because of their enormous potential. We are delighted to welcome them into the Atkinson Scholarship program and are pleased to entrust them with the Atkinsons’ legacy.”
“It is always challenging to narrow down the pool of applicants to the final 15 because there are so many outstanding and deserving students who apply. It was particularly difficult this year due to the record number of applications we received," Brunner said.
“All of our recipients are driven, dedicated and inspiring students who are deeply committed to their academic and extracurricular pursuits. But beyond that, they are caring, resilient and passionate individuals who are focused on personal growth and have a strong desire to give back to their community. They're poised to make a positive difference in the world and we look forward to following their progress throughout their college years and beyond.”
