February 2013

February is the shortest month of the year, but that hasn't stopped us from being busy here at SugarHill. Lots of cool sessions and special events happening in the studio. Currently we're undergoing some renovations and we'll soon be happy to announce some new SugarHill residents! But we're getting ahead of ourselves...

This month we've featured more of what Andy's been up to in the studios as well as some partnerships with some pretty cool organizations like Just About Kids, Love Street Light Circus, NBC's The Voice, and Texas Folk Life.

Andy's Rockin and Bach'N

Andy's been busy in the studios recording all kinds of music. One project he's been working on this month is a CD of original compositions by Rice University music professor, Richard Lavenda. While the tracking is being done at Rice's Stude Concert Hall- all of the editing and mixing has been done here at SugarHill in the cozy Studio B with Andy and Richard himself.

Also this month, Andy had the opportunity to work on some real rock n roll music with the band Trio Grande, from Kingsville, Texas. This album is the band's first studio album in over 20 years. It was produced by Carl Becker (featured in House of Hits), who's no stranger to SugarHill having his own record label J-Beck Records in the 1960's. Becker's produced the likes of Tony Joe White, Zachary Thaks, and Bad Seeds.

Earlier this month we had the pleasure of hosting an event thanking the volunteers for Love Street Light Circus. Guests were invited to bring their instruments for an impromptu jam session in Studio A. Everyone enjoyed refreshments and door prizes as they celebrated their work for the community.

Love Street - The Alliance for Children and Music is a Houston charity dedicated to improving children's lives through the healing and enriching power of music. Love Street brings Houston's musicians to where they are most needed - area children's hospitals and other facilities without the resources to meet their needs for live music.
Special Thanks to
Patrick Waites and Lisa Watts
for putting this together!
Dan, Alicia, and Mike
Back in the Studio

Dan Workman, Alicia Gianni, and Mike Whitebread get fired up in Studio B.

Alicia is working on new material for her debut CD and Dan and Mike have been tapped to be co-producers once again.  Dan reports: "This song continues our explorations of minimalistic arrangements.  Nowhere to hide!   Good thing we have Alicia's amazing voice and lyrics to lean on.  Now where's that SK-1....?"

For the Love of Music

Kingwood High School's non profit organization, Just About Kids hosted their second annual singing competition this month. Over 120 singers from all over Humble I.S.D. auditioned for a chance to compete for talent contracts, college scholarships, and a chance to record a demo song here at SugarHill. The competition, "For the Love of Music" is named in honor of Kingwood High School's Favorite substitute teacher, Mr. Love who recently turned 92 years old.

SugarHill was the location for for NBC's The Voice call-back casting auditions!

We had all hands on deck around the clock to make sure everyone got a chance to shine.
In 2 days over 200 artists came through our doors to show judges that they had what it takes to be on the 5th season of the popular primetime TV show.  In past seasons, some of the audition tapes filmed here made it to the episodes. Tune in to see if you can spot us as the backdrop!
