Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

SMART Members Assistance Training (MAP) is a four-day program offering theoretical knowledge and the practice of basic skills necessary for crisis intervention. One of the cornerstones of MAP training is suicide prevention. Are You Ready?

With Suicide Prevention Awareness Month (September) in full swing, the issue is going to be getting a lot air time-from the media, from the suicide prevention community, and, hopefully, from the general public.

Here are 8 things anyone can do to get ready for suicide prevention efforts:
  1. Prep social media plan
  2. Be sure to use the hashtags: #BeThere #NSPW #WSPD17
  3. Compile stories of hope to share like Live through This and Man Therapy
  4. Ask your employer or school about training such as QPR, SafeTalk or ASIST
  5. Research events happening in your community such as the "Out of Darkness Walks"
  6. Share resources like the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and Crisis Textline
  7. Write a blog
  8. Engage local media
