"Women of Dance: In Her Shoes" is a first-person documentary examining a life of dance by the most influential women in dance. It is not a ‘how they did it textbook’ of great artists’ professional lives, but the sharing of ‘the inner secrets they protected’ to overcome the cultural expectations of being a woman.
For years dance was dominated by men. Whether as stars in ballet, jazz, modern, street, or as dance patrons, men commissioned the standards, controlled the styles. In recent years women have quietly, but progressively, redirected the spotlight. Now it is the female choreographers who set the dances, select the artists and manage the business directions of new forms of performance expression.
Debbie Allen, Chita Rivera, Ann-Margret, Paula Abdul, Radio City Hall Rockettes, Bebe Neuwirth, Mitzy Gaynor, Toni Basil, Rita Moreno, Shirly McClaine and others candidly deconstruct those controversies sharing their experiences as daughters, single women and even as mothers with daughters, managing successes, failures, challenges; the forces which molded them into the woman who changed the purpose of dance.
