Sisters in STEM was a one-week virtual camp made possible by Siemens USA for girls in 6th and 7th grades to inspire girls to have fun while exploring coding, engineering, and technology. Girls participated in interactive hands-on activities where they explore, ask questions, persist, and solve problems. They learned to view STEM careers as exciting and engage in workshops focused on wellness, leadership, and self-care.

The Eureka! program is an intensive, five-year STEM based program for 8th-12th grade girls and young women offered in partnership with Drexel University that builds confidence and skills through hands-on opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math. Utilizing a whole girl approach, the program also incorporates physical fitness, personal development, and college and career readiness. Eureka! broadens girls’ academic and career interests, encourages enrollment in advanced math and science courses, promotes positive risk-taking, and assists girls in developing professional networks. This summer we hosted 2 cohorts of Eurekans at Drexel University and 1 cohort hybrid with in-person professional development opportunities.

During the summer, Girls Inc. held a six week camp for rising first grade students at Bridesburg Elementary School in partnership with the Philadelphia Office of Children and Families (OCF). Thirty-two students from all over the Philadelphia region participated in fun-filled literacy, STEM, and sports activities. Girls Inc. collaborated with Queen’s Gambit, a chess organization, and ASAP Scrabble. Students learned to play beginner’s chess and loved it. At the end of the summer camp, a parent said, “I am so thankful for the summer program. [My child] is doing so well in school now ... getting 100s on assignments!”

This four-week literacy camp was designed to address the literacy-based needs of girls in grades K-3 by providing in-person and virtual large and small group instruction designed to foster a lifelong love of reading, made possible by the Wesley Family Foundation. Our hybrid summer camp combined literacy with exploring fun and fascinating themes including science, arts, leadership, and culture. Each week of camp had a special focus on a different Disney movie, including Moana, Zootopia, and Frozen!

"The girls and staff alike were excited to see me after not having programming for more than a year. Girls Inc. seemed to reignite their light ... [We] gave them some variety and a friendly familiar face during what is already a challenging time for them compounded with the unpredictable state of the world."
