President's Message
Colleagues:

I am very happy and honored to welcome you to the 2017/18 fiscal year of NAIFA Fort Worth.  We have put in place an excellent Board of Directors, including new board members Melina Morrison of Ohio National and Bobby Ellis of AXA Advisors.   The board has already been very busy setting up an exciting year of events for all of us.  Details of these events can be found elsewhere in this newsletter, but here are a few highlights:

  • President Elect Carrie Sayre has organized all our luncheon speakers for the year covering a wide range of interesting topics;
  • Immediate Past President Criss Crombie has set up Community Service Projects for us with Habitat for Humanity and will also be leading our annual recognition of local first responders;
  • Our annual CE Day is set for November and will be held at the brand new Top Golf facility in Fort Worth; and
  • The third annual Boots and Bling Awards Banquet is set for April and we look forward to honoring our Career Service Award Winner at that event.

As many of you know, these are turbulent times in our industry as well as in our association.  Led by our National Committee Chair Frank Correa, we will continue to monitor developments with the Department of Labor Fiduciary Regulations and keep you informed and involved as best we can.  In September, we will be sending delegates to the National NAIFA Conference in Orlando.  On the docket will be motions regarding the NAIFA 20/20 QME reorganization proposal.  Board member Brett Ruddell has done an outstanding job representing us in this process and we look forward to hearing updates from him.

The strength of our association lies in our membership and we need to recruit and retain members if we are to continue to be a vibrant NAIFA Local.  Consequently, I am issuing a “Membership Challenge” to all of us.  I challenge each of us to recruit one new member this year.  If all of us did this our membership would double and this would dramatically improve our ability to serve our members and local community.  Please think about who your recruit might be and bring her or him to the September luncheon.  First time luncheon attendees don’t have to pay so your guest will get to meet and network with our members, benefit from an excellent industry related presentation, and enjoy a free lunch.
I’d also like to invite you to join the President’s Cabinet.  Members of this select group get to attend luncheons for free and also receive other benefits like invitations and discounts to other special events.  Membership of the President’s Cabinet costs $100.

All in all, 2017/18 will be an exciting year for NAIFA Fort Worth and I am looking forward to greeting each of you at a luncheon or other event.  If you have any suggestions or, better yet, if you would like to get involved and lend a hand please do not hesitate to contact me or one of my fellow board members.

  Community Service - Help Build a Home! 
Join us! Come out and support Habitat for Humanity along with other NAIFA Fort Worth members and friends.

All volunteers will receive a NAIFA Fort Worth hat and a NAIFA Fort Worth t-shirt!  NAIFA Fort Worth has 10 reserved volunteer slots. We need to register using the sign-up link below. Everyone must register themselves so they can agree to our digital liability waiver and provide emergency contact information.

Our build day is during our Carver Heights East Blitz Build, so lunch will be provided by Trinity Habitat. The Blitz Build is a focused period of construction where we are building five houses simultaneously on the same street in the Carver Heights East neighborhood.

NAIFA 20/20 QME Update

Message from NAIFA-Texas:

       

You should have received an email from NAIFA National President Paul Dougherty on July 19th providing information on the new proposed national bylaws that will be voted on at NAIFA's Annual Conference in Orlando in September.   To help NAIFA-Texas members better understand why NAIFA is proposing a new set of bylaws, we recommend reading the following:  Backgrounder and FAQ on the Board's Proposed Revision of NAIFA's National Bylaws.  This is the best summary of information.  If you want to delve deeper into the process, you can read the email from NAIFA National President Paul Dougherty which includes links to many documents and web pages that were developed throughout this process.

DOL Update


     A House of Representatives panel has approved legislation to rescind the Department of Labor’s fiduciary rule, while the House Appropriations Committee separately adopted a funding bill that would prohibit enforcement of the rule.

     The House Education and Workforce Committee voted 23-to-17 along party lines in favor of the Affordable Retirement Advice for Savers Act, which would nullify the DOL rule and implement a new best-interest standard for retirement advisors. 

     Sponsor Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) touted the bill as protecting investors without the DOL rule’s perceived defect of limiting access to advice.Separately, the Appropriations Committee approved a draft DOL funding bill that declares the DOL rule “shall have no force or effect.”

     Yet another effort to repeal the DOL rule is also afoot in the House: Draft legislation under consideration in the Financial Services Committee would strike down the DOL requirements and institute a new best-interest standard.

     The House bills are likely to continue to advance. But their prospects are much weaker in the Senate, where Democrats have enough members to sustain a filibuster.

Department of Labor Fiduciary Rule

As you know, the Department of Labor fiduciary rule has already begun its harmful effect on Americans. It is imperative that we act now to let Secretary Acosta know that the rule must be delayed to prevent further harm. Additionally, we need to alert him to the unintended liability created by the private right of action and encourage the Department to work closely with other agencies towards a single, harmonized best interest standard. The Department RFI comment period will remain open until August 7th. Secretary Acosta needs to hear from individuals in the industry to ensure the Department fully understands the negative consequences of the current fiduciary rule.
