By early September, we'll roll out two more videos and articles - for a total of five - each focusing on a different nurse researcher (who) and exploring one of five different areas of research (cares). UMMS Endows Scholarship in Honor of Alumna Rowen

The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) has endowed a scholarship in honor of UMSON alumna Lisa Rowen, DNSc, MS '86, RN, CENP, FAAN. Rowen, chief nurse executive for UMMS and senior vice president for patient care services and chief nursing officer at the University of Maryland Medical Center, is being honored for her leadership and dedication to nursing practice, education, and research. Two UMSON Faculty Members Inducted as AANP Fellows

Catherine Haut, DNP '10, MS '93, RN, CRNP, PNP, and Roseann Velez, DNP, CRNP, FNP-BC, were recently inducted as 2017 Fellows of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. The association selects fellows based on outstanding contributions to clinical practice, research, education, or policy. Read more
UMSON Faculty and Alumnae to be Honored at STTI Convention

Two UMSON faculty members and four alumnae will be honored at the Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), Honor Society of Nursing, 44th Biennial Convention, being held in Indianapolis, Oct. 28-Nov. 1. Dean Jane M. Kirschling, PhD, RN, FAAN, will receive the Melanie C. Dreher Outstanding Dean Award for Excellence in Chapter Support, and Erika Friedmann, PhD, professor and associate dean of research, will be named an honorary member of STTI. Additionally, Janice Hoffman, PhD '06, RN, ANEF; Robin Newhouse, PhD '00, MS '99, BSN '87, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN; Elizabeth Sloand, PhD, MS '86, CPNP, FAAN; and Nancy Sullivan, DNP, MS '92, BSN '75, RN, will also receive awards. UMSON Awarded American Nurses Credentialing Center's Highest Accreditation Distinction

The School of Nursing has been awarded Accreditation with Distinction as a Provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Accreditation Program. Accreditation with Distinction is the highest recognition that ANCC awards. Read more

Our  website has a new look. The next time you visit, you might notice:
* an interactive program explorer to help future students plan their academic path
* improved navigation, no matter what device you're using
* a cleaner, more contemporary design.

The changes reflect industry standards and best practices and take into account feedback from surveyed community members.
Goodwin Named Director of Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program

Jana Goodwin, PhD, RN, CNE, assistant professor, has been named director of UMSON's Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Goodwin has been on the faculty since 2001. Read more
Ogbolu and UMSON Students Travel to Brazil 

Last month, Yolanda Ogbolu, PhD '11, MS '05, BSN '04, CRNP-Neonatal, associate professor and director, Office of Global Health, and three Global Health Certificate students assessed Saúde Criança Association, which has improved the quality of life for impoverished families by addressing the social determinants of health. The students will give presentations about their experiences at the School of Nursing on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
Mitchell Receives Western Maryland Area Health Education Center's John M. Dennis Award

Jacqueline C. Mitchell, MS '07, CRNA, director of clinical education, was recently honored with the John M. Dennis Award by the Western Maryland Area Health Education Center. The award recognizes her leadership and advocacy for rural practice opportunities; it acknowledges university representatives who have made noteworthy contributions to off-campus health professional education in Western Maryland through outstanding leadership, ingenuity, advocacy, and education. Resnick Receives David H. Solomon Public Service Award  

Barbara Resnick, PhD '96, RN, CRNP, FAAN, FAANP, professor and Sonia Ziporkin Gershowitz Chair in Gerontology, received the American Geriatrics Society's David H. Solomon Public Service Award, in recognition of her career accomplishments. Read more.
McLaine Receives Baltimore City Health Equity Award   

Pat McLaine, DrPH, MPH, RN, assistant professor and director, Community/Public Health Nursing master's specialty, recently received a Baltimore City Health Equity Award at the Healthy Baltimore 2020 Community Conversation. Read more.
Trinkoff Co-Authors Award-Winning Training Program  

Alison M. Trinkoff, ScD, MPH, BSN, RN, FAAN, professor, is a co-author of an online evidence-based training program that recently won the 2017 Bullard-Sherwood Research to Practice Intervention Award from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. Read more.
Trocky Selected to Leadership for Academic Nursing Program 

Nina Trocky, DNP, RN, NE-BC, CNE, assistant professor and associate dean for the baccalaureate program, is one of 40 fellows nationwide selected to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's Leadership for Academic Nursing Program. Read more.
UMSON DNP Student Receives Award from Heart Failure Society of America

Johana Almansa, MS '11, a DNP student, was selected as the winner of the 2017 Clinical Excellence in Nursing Award from the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA). Almansa developed a clinical pathway to improve the recognition of cardiac amyloidosis, a condition that causes heart failure and is routinely mis- or under-diagnosed, and to expedite diagnosis and referral for treatment. The project was implemented at Johns Hopkins Hospital last spring.  
Living History Museum Docents Tour Bromo Seltzer Arts Center  

On June 27, volunteer docents from UMSON's Living History Museum were treated to a tour of the Bromo Seltzer Arts Center and an appreciation luncheon at the School. The Museum is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. during the school year. It will reopen for the fall semester on Tuesday, Aug. 29. 
School Seeking Adjunct Professors and Preceptors
 
UMSON is seeking adjunct faculty members and preceptors. The School hires adjunct faculty members to provide clinical instruction to entry-level students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and the Clinical Nurse Leader master's option. UMSON is also seeking skilled, experienced preceptors to work with students as they complete their clinical requirements.

Welcome New UMSON Staff

Nataki McDade has joined UMSON's Office of Student and Academic Services as an enrollment specialist. McDade comes to UMSON from Swift Staffing. She earned her bachelor's degree in philosophy from Notre Dame of Maryland University.

Nichole Schumaker
has joined UMSON's Office of Information Learning and Technology as an instructional technologist. Schumaker comes to UMSON from Connections Education, where she served as a curriculum specialist. She earned a master's of education degree in instructional technology from the University of Maryland, University College and a bachelor's degree in secondary education and government and politics from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Glass Receives International Achievement Award

Nancy Glass, PhD '01, RN, professor and associate dean for research, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, received the 2017 International Achievement Award, which is given by the International Council of Nurses' Florence Nightingale International Foundation. Read more.

Hinderer Receives Distinguished Faculty Award

Katherine Simmons Hinderer, PhD '10, BSN '98, RN, CCRN-K, CNE,
was the recipient of the 2017 Lucy Tull Distinguished Faculty Award at Salisbury University for excellence in nursing education and commitment to regional health care. She was recognized for her contributions to nursing education and her role as a leader in the Eastern Shore Collaborative for Interprofessional Education, a joint effort between Salisbury University and the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. Hoffman Appointed Senior Associate Dean at GW School of Nursing

Janice J. Hoffman, PhD '06, RN, ANEF, has been appointed senior associate dean for academic affairs at The George Washington University School of Nursing. Hoffman most recently served as associate dean of academic affairs at the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing. Read more.




Ross has DNP Project Published in Military Journal
 
Angela Ross, DNP '14, MS '98, MPH, PMP, PHCNS-BC, LTC, assistant professor, University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston, School of Biomedical Informatics, had her DNP project "An Outpatient Performance Improvement Project: A Baseline Assessment of Adherence to Pain Reassessment Standards," published in the May 2017 issue of the Journal of Military Medicine.


Schoenbaum Elected to Board of Directors

Anna Schoenbaum, DNP '16, MS '01, director, portfolio epic clinical applications information services & technology, University of Maryland Medical System, is a newly elected member of the Maryland Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's board of directors. Career Resources for Alumni
 
UMSON students and alumni can access professional career services through the Student Success Center. Services include a job board, resume and cover letter writing workshops, interviewing skills workshops, mock interviews, and online resources.
Docents Needed for Living History Museum
   
The UMSON Living History Museum is seeking alumni volunteers to serve as docents. The museum is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the academic semesters. Docents are also needed for occasional special events, such as school tours and open houses for new and prospective students. Susan L. Bindon, DNP '11, MS '96, RN-BC, CNE, assistant professor, published the article "Professional Development Strategies to Enhance Nurses' Knowledge and Maintain Safe Practice," in the August 2017 edition of the Association of perioperative Registered Nurses Journal (106:2, p. 99-110). The journal selected the article as the continuing education feature for its special focus issue highlighting nursing education. Read more.
Suzanne Sherwood MS '93, BSN '87, RN, TCRN, assistant professor, presented two lectures at the American Association of Critical Care Nurses National Teaching Institute in Houston, Texas, in May: "Management and Care of Patients with Gunshot Wounds to the Abdomen," and "Organ Donation; Shifting perspectives in a Tragic Situation."
