Summer 2019 Newsletter
Four fellowship programs. Fifty-six Fellows. Two powerfully moving annual awards. The first EF conference on the continent of Africa. Our 2019 Global, Island of Ireland and Zhi-Xing Fellows have all returned home after weeks of intensive, inspiring travel, while many of our 2019 USA Fellows are just beginning their fellowship journey. After a whirlwind Spring Program, the hazy days of summer are here.
2019 Global Program
Twenty-two Fellows in the 2019 Global Program traveled to the United States this spring, representing countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the South Pacific. They pursued fellowships ranging from treating pancreatic cancer to preparing Tanzania’s graduates for the workforce to strengthening counterterrorism laws.
2019 Island of Ireland Program
Thirty years after EF’s historic Single-Area Program brought together Fellows from Ireland’s North and South, 14 new Eisenhower Fellows arrived in the U.S. from the Island of Ireland in May 2019. Amid the chaos and uncertainty of Brexit, the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union that threatens to unravel the peace that has held for more than two decades, seven fellows from the South and seven from the North followed in the footsteps of their predecessors from EF’s 1989 Irish Fellows.
2019 Zhi-Xing Fellows
In June 2019, Eisenhower Fellowships and the China Education Association for International Exchange celebrated the fifth year of the Zhi-Xing China Eisenhower Fellowship Program. Launched in 2015, CEAIE and EF expanded their longstanding partnership with this prestigious fellowship program, designed jointly and implemented as a component of EF's USA Program.
Annual Meeting Day 2019
Each year in early May, EF’s Annual Meeting Day brings together in Philadelphia our Board of Trustees, staff and Fellows from around the world for a day of seminars, discussion groups, networking and a renewed call to our guiding mission of making the world more peaceful, prosperous and just.
EF Africa Regional Conference in Kigali, Rwanda
The conference was the first on the continent of Africa in EF’s history, featuring Rwandan President Paul Kagame. The gathering brought together more than 300 people, including Fellows from 21 countries.
This Fall
Meet the Fall 2019 Latin American and Caribbean Fellows

Eisenhower Fellowships has selected 23 ascendant leaders for its Fall Latin American and Caribbean Fellowship program. These trailblazing Fellows hail from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela, and represent a broad range of public, private and nonprofit fields. They include a best-selling children’s book author building an online resource for social and emotional learning, a professor of structural engineering designing dynamic disaster response plans and a start-up co-founder investing in sustainable Jamaican small businesses.

“These innovative leaders are committed to effecting real change and making a positive impact in their countries and across the region. I’m delighted to welcome them into the influential global network of Eisenhower Fellowships,” said Dr. Robert M. Gates, chairman of Eisenhower Fellowships.

Global Call for Innovative Education Projects

EF announces a global call for innovative education projects of impact for presentation in our eLabs, interactive forums at the EF Global Conference on the Future of Education in Cartagena, Colombia in February 2020. More detailed information on the proposal process can be found on the EF website . Fellows are invited to submit applications here .
