Summer 2020
Greetings MPI Oregon Chapter Members!

I am excited, honored and full of hope to be your 2020-2021 Chapter President. This year is not what I or any of you anticipated as many of our foundations have been put to the test in ways that we never expected. I can tell you that when things are perfect we do not grow and learn and so many of our personal and professional challenges have brought opportunities that may bring change, rewards, nervousness and excitement to us daily.

For me, I feel fortunate to be able to lead the Chapter this coming year and I wanted to share a few wins that the Board has been able to complete.

We had our first annual board retreat virtually (instead of in person) in May, this is a time where we work on the business year and 18-month calendar for the year, it is also a time that the board comes together to bond, share friendships and solidify our plan for the year ahead.

We held our first board installation (again, virtually) which was a fun and successful transition and was attended by more members than we have ever had in attendance. Including a few past Presidents, our Master of Ceremonies, Royce Mason, and our unofficial mascot "Thor the Deer" that many of you may know from social media.
Hi fellow MPI Oregon Chapter members!

The past few months have been unlike any other in most of our lifetimes. The turbulence impacting our families, communities, and industry have challenged us as never before to support one another with purpose and strength.

It has been an honor to be your 2019-2020 President, and I want to thank the 2019-2020 Board of Directors for your diligent and passionate devotion to our Chapter and members. It is your time committed to our chapter throughout the entire year that ensures our success. I am so lucky to have worked with such a phenomenal team! This experience has been so rewarding and not one I will soon forget. I appreciate you all and look forward to supporting Tara Thomas as she continues to build our chapter's success now for 2020-2021!
Ever since she was a little girl Carolyn has been volunteering to help organize 'something' and once word got out about her skills she was always being asked to help out, whether it was organizing get-togethers for the other wives on the Air Force base in New Mexico who all had husbands over in Vietnam to being the mom who planned all the class parties in her kids classes to planning over 400 programs a year at the Oregon State Bar. And in there she also sold wigs, worked her way up at U.S. National Bank, taught Hotel & Convention Management at Mt. Hood Community College, and raised two kids!

Carolyn has had her own business, Plans & Action, since 1997 and everyone who knows her will know that she isn't kidding when she says she loves to stay busy! MPI Oregon has benefited from this greatly as she has volunteered on a committee every single year in her 30 years of being a member including a year of being President from 1996-97.

"Carolyn has been a tireless champion for the local event industry with a focus on inspiring others in our profession. She has been with our Chapter since the start, and has been involved with a genuine commitment and passion since 1990! Our Chapter reveres Carolyn and appreciates all her contributions - so excited for her and her well-deserved award!" says Cathy Mason, MPI Oregon past president (2019-2020).

Some of the past awards bestowed upon Carolyn by MPI Oregon are Planner of the Year in 1993, 1998 and 2007, Mentor of the Year in 2009, Torchlight Award in 2006 and the Dian Lindsay Award in 2012. She has served on the Board, co-chaired the Spring Conference (now Cascadia) in 1992 and literally served on every committee at one time or another!

Carolyn not only gives so much of her time to help MPI, she is also very involved in the Greater Oregon Society of Government Meeting Professionals serving as president for a 2-year term and is currently a National Board Director for the national SGMP.

One of the events she is most proud of is honoring Portland's homeless on Christmas Day. Carolyn started this event and ran it from 1988-95 in Pioneer Courthouse Square. Her team of volunteers collected clothing, food, hot drinks, blankets, hats and gloves and invited anyone without a home in Portland to come enjoy some Christmas cheer. They served between 300-400 people each year and were helped by the Governor and the First Lady, Girl Scouts, fellow employees, family and friends. The project is still being organized by the Girl Scouts.

We are so happy to be able to recognize Carolyn Wence, CMP, CGMP for all her contributions and commitment to the meetings industry and MPI. We look forward to celebrating Carolyn's accomplishments with all of you at the August Awards Celebration!

About the August Awards Celebration

MPI Oregon wouldn't be able to offer all our programs to our members without the great work from our many volunteer leaders! Some of these leaders have gone above and beyond and we are excited to be able to honor all of our award nominees for this year's August Awards Celebration (formerly known as the Annual Awards Gala but re-imagined this year with physical distancing for the safety of all our members). We hope you will SAVE THE DATE for August 18 and join us as we announce the winners in each of these award categories.

CMP Study Group - Distance Learning at its Best!
By Christina Devlin, CMP, CMM

The Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) is a great addition for your career as a meeting professional. While the Meetings Industry is recovering from COVID-19, there is no better time to be ready to hit the ground running and add CMP to your name this fall!

The MPI Oregon Chapter has been practicing "distance learning" for several years through the CMP study group. The group meets online through Zoom so that everyone is able to participate without dealing with traffic to get to a study session. And now with COVID-19 to consider, you can be anywhere in the world, from any MPI Chapter, and participate in our study group! Each study session helps keep you on track with your studying.

The study group covers ten domains (or topics) contained in the Events Industry Council CMP International Standards ( CMP-IS ) syllabus.

The CMP exam fell victim to COVID-19 this past May as testing centers in the United States and Canada cancelled the exam due to health and safety guidelines. The hope and plan moving forward is that testing centers will reopen in August for the next opportunity to take the exam.

The Events Industry Council and the CMP Commission are keeping watch on the situation and will update their website should anything change. For more information on the CMP, go to MPI Oregon Chapter website certification page . Or visit the Events Industry Council CMP FAQ website page.

New Members & New Member Spotlight
MPI Oregon members, if you have not heard from a board member within the past 3-4 months it might be that your MPI Profile needs to be updated. As we have tried to phone and email our members, we are some getting bad phone numbers and hard bounces on emails.

To access your Profile Page, go to mpi.org/account and log in. That will take you to your Profile page indicating when your MPI Oregon membership needs to be renewed, your photo, name, title, business and contact information! We look forward to connecting with you and to keeping you updated on ways to find increased value with your MPI Oregon Membership. Because, Members Matter!
