What is the Science of Reading? What is Structured Literacy?
|
|
Imagine yourself as a child or teen who struggles with reading, spelling, and writing papers. You even struggle at times to pronounce words correctly, e.g., elegator, subjatute, expations. It may take you a beat longer to catch on to that joke everyone else in your crowd is laughing at. You go through your day with your stomach in knots and find yourself holding your breath a lot. You just want to escape.
Now imagine you're a teacher who recognizes the signs of dyslexia. Imagine you are equipped with the knowledge and training to bring the student out of the darkness. Imagine yourself as the teacher who could PREVENT the darkness from ever consuming a young child.

The first step for every teacher of reading is to learn about the science of reading. From this, enlightened teachers can begin to evaluate their current instructional practices through a new lens.

Richard Branson's Epic Moment
|
|
Despite his difficulties in school, entrepreneur and billionaire Richard Branson embraced his dyslexia and developed an I CAN and I WILL attitude.
On Sunday, July 11 his air-launched spaceplane rocketed about 50 miles above the Earth. Read his blog post here.
"I was once a child with a dream looking up to the stars. Now I'm an adult in a spaceship looking down to our beautiful Earth. To the next generation of dreamers: if we can do this, just imagine what you can do!" - Richard Branson
Richard Branson talks openly and often about his dyslexia.
Encourage your children to dream and to dream big!

Join us for a free IDA-GA outreach webinar on August 25. Tatyana Elleseff, CCC-SLP will discuss the importance appropriate language and literacy testing plays in the remediation of reading-based disabilities. She will review current controversies with respect to the dyslexia diagnosis, as well as describe the role of language as a contributing factor to reading and writing deficits. She will also explain the limitations of popularly recommended reading approaches/ /programs (e.g., Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Lindamood-Bell, Barton, etc.) with respect to exclusivity of use. Finally, she will outline the process leading up to the appropriate treatment goal recommendations.

What Parents Need to Know about the Special Needs Scholarship
|
|
PARENTS - Changes to the GA Special Needs Scholarship went into effect July 1st. The Georgia Special Needs Scholarship (also known as the SB10 waiver) enables students with special needs and a prior one-year in public school to take the state funds the student earns to an approved private school in the form of a scholarship.
In June, Hannah Heck joined Stephen Quinn of GeorgiaCAN for an informative hour-long Facebook Live webinar explaining SB10. You can watch the recording here.
Keep checking back for updates! It will soon be packed with a wide range of helpful information and resources for families.
