Alumni Newsletter

September 22, 2022

Greetings from Pam Farmer
Director of Alumni Engagement

Dear St. Andrew’s Alumni,

Hope you had a fabulous summer! Now that it's officially fall, I can go for the Pumpkin Latte! It is wonderful to see the kids come back to campus and enjoy normal activities like ice cream socials and orientation activities. The returning boarders went ziplining and the new students did a scavenger hunt around campus.

I am looking forward to welcoming back our alumni children; we have five on campus this year! We also welcome our alumna Ashley Taber ‘02 back to campus. Ashley is a teaching assistant for The Wolf Academy, and soon will be a dorm parent in Bill’s house.

On October 22 we will be having Fall Family Weekend. Come watch the soccer games, the Eric Jacober '07 Cross Country Race, and then join us at 6:00 p.m. at The Guild in Warren for drinks and appetizers.

We look forward to seeing more of you! I am generally on campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please come for lunch. The food is awesome this year and it feels great to welcome you back to campus.

Read on for alumni happenings and updates from the summer.

With love,

Pam

Our Community

The Holly Mendes Garden

On August 30, we hosted an intimate reception to dedicate the completion of the garden, outdoor classroom space, and amphitheater built in honor of beloved St. Andrew's teacher Holly Mendes. Holly's family, friends, and colleagues gathered in the beautifully transformed space outside the Stone academic building on campus — a place dear to Holly throughout her 35-year career at the school.

Thank you to everyone who helped in the planning and creation of this project, with a special shout-out to Holmes Landscaping, Hidden Gardens, Alan Nunes, Jean Arnold, Sue McGann, Kelly Bourk, and Mike Hart. Holly's legacy will forever live on in our hearts, and in the heart of campus with this memorial garden.

And thank you to all of the generous donors who helped establish the Holly Mendes Endowment Fund, which will support the programs Holly loved most, including financial aid for a learning services student. To learn more about this fund and to make a gift, please contact Kerrie Donahue at kdonahue@standrews-ri.org.

New Website and Social Media

Make sure you check out our new school website and our alumni Twitter account @SASRIAlumni. Please send me your news so I can tweet it out. This then goes to our website for all to see your accomplishments.

Hope to see you all on campus soon!

Alumni Spotlight

Russ DeRemer '09

As a high school student, I was drawn to the idea of transferring to St. Andrew’s School because of the school's reputation of elite athletics and academic excellence. Once I visited the campus and first met with the St. Andrew's faculty and athletic staff, I immediately sensed the spirit of community and was eager to be a part of it.

My experience as a student-athlete at St. Andrew’s truly shaped who I am today. On the court, I learned many of the core competencies that allow me to be successful in my career. I developed teamwork, collaboration, and time management skills under the leadership of Coach Hart and Coach O'Shea. They believed in me, which gave me the confidence to believe in myself. Their transparent guidance and mentorship helped me achieve my dream of attending Syracuse University and being a member of the Division 1 Basketball Program.

While at Syracuse, I relied on the time management skills that I learned at St. Andrew's to balance both academics and basketball. I also leveraged the math foundational knowledge I gained at St. Andrew’s to become a Finance major. I graduated from my Bachelor’s program Summa Cum Laude in three years and was a member of the Big East Conference All-Academic Team all three years. During my fourth year on campus, I completed a Master of Science program in New Media Management at Syracuse's Newhouse School of Communications then headed to Wall Street.

I began my career at Credit Suisse in Equity Research, then moved on to Welton Investment Partners where I served as an Investor Solutions Analyst. I leveraged my capabilities in wealth strategy and investment analysis when I joined J.P. Morgan Wealth Management in 2019, where I currently am an Investment Associate for the Lynn Group. Our team builds customized investment portfolios for High Net-Worth individuals, Family Offices and Foundations & Endowments. The discipline, attention to detail, and organizational skills that I learned at St. Andrew’s enable me to provide an exceptional client experience while delivering complex wealth management solutions.

I am immensely proud to call myself an alumnus of St. Andrew's and I am forever grateful to the teachers, coaches, and staff who helped me become the person I am today. Go Saints!

Andrew Saftel ‘77 will be featured in an exhibit at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The show will open on August 6 and run through the first week of October. Named for one of Saftel’s most recent works (which is featured in the exhibit), “Peas Come To Table” is a phrase from Thomas Jefferson’s farm book and is written in his handwriting on the painting.

Said Saftel, “Jefferson kept meticulous notes in his farm log, and his entry from May 23 says, “Peas Come To Table.” I downloaded it from the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston. Last fall, I visited Jefferson’s Poplar Forest home in Bedford, Virginia. He built it as a retirement home, and I was inspired to make a painting about it. There will be 19 pieces in this exhibition; paintings on panel, works on paper, one tapestry, and one wall construction.” View the final cut of the show here on Vimeo.

James (Jim) Andrews ‘83 writes, “I have been presented with a fantastic opportunity at Penn State. It is the type of opportunity I have wanted to pursue for years as the next step in my academic career. Many of you have become accustomed to my being connected to the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work. But yes, I am actually leaving Pitt!! And to paraphrase a very (very) old movie line: they made an offer I couldn’t refuse.

Effective this summer, I will begin working to develop a full-time online Master of Social Work program in Penn State’s World Campus program as the inaugural Field Education Director at the rank of Associate Teaching Professor!

This is bittersweet. The University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work has been a central fixture of my personal and professional life for more than half of my career.

I have been involved with Pitt-SSW for nearly twenty years in various capacities. I have been affiliated with the School as a field instructor (2003-2014), an adjunct faculty member (2005-2018), a Program Coordinator – MSW-Johnstown (2018-2020), and most recently full-time lecturer (2020-2022). I had the honor of being the inaugural recipient of the Outstanding Field Instructor Award in 2012. During my time with Pitt-SSW, I have also provided many CEU training events through the Continuing Education Office. And most recently, I am proud to be the lead faculty developer for the School of Social Work’s LCSW Clinical Supervision Institute project.

It has been my honor and privilege to mentor and teach the many students in my classes over the years at Pitt-SSW. It has been a high point of my professional and academic career to have been associated with the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work for the past nearly twenty years. So, it is with mixed emotions of excitement, pride, and sadness that I conclude this portion of my academic career and professional life” Good luck Jim!

Shawn Egan ‘89 writes, “I have been working with Men's Wearhouse for the past 13 years and have some exciting news to share. I was just promoted to Assistant Manager at the Men's Wearhouse store on Rte 114 in Peabody, MA. It has been a long road, but persistence and hard work pay off. If anyone is in the Peabody, MA area, stop by and say hello.”

Jason Maron '91 is featured in this YouTube video as a top Westwood Business. Congratulations to you and your right-hand man Steve Pansey ‘89 for your forward thinking, and thank you for always supporting St. Andrew’s with great auction items and other support every time I call.

All St. Andrew’s alumni or faculty members registered as Democrats here in Newport are welcome to email me. I am also a member of the Local Advisory Group (LAG ) here in Newport. We’re responsible for coming up with the proposed zoning amendments in the North End Urban Plan that were passed unanimously by Newport City Council in the spring, making Newport the first municipality in the state to achieve equitable development. Any alumni who are interested in learning more are welcome to contact me. I’m also celebrating 10 years at Saccucci Honda as a Sales and Leasing consultant and would be happy to help any alumni or faculty member with their next vehicle.”

I am working in summer schools for severe special education for preschool with nonverbal students, and I am coaching middle school soccer and basketball. I am also continuing to work Hoops with Hart in the summertime with Coach Hart.”

Sarah Richardson ’04 writes, “Anyone who knows me is aware of my journey to accomplish my dream of becoming a Nurse Practitioner. That dream having been accomplished, the next logical step was to find my dream job. And guess what, y'all, I did! For those of you who don't know, I have accepted a position with LPG Neurosurgery as an Adult-Geriatric NP and will be starting next month. I'm excited and terrified at the same time, but more than anything, I'm thankful. I'm going to be doing what I always dreamed of: caring for patients in the office setting as well as during surgery as a provider.”
