I graduated from QVCC in 2021 after taking classes part-time for five+ years to complete my business degree. I had such a great experience, and really enjoyed the local-feel, small class sizes, and access to instructors who had loads of real-life experience in their fields and were passionate about what they were teaching.
My education at QVCC has been so beneficial, and the confidence and know-how that it provided allowed my wife and me to go into business ourselves. Using what I learned at QVCC, we acquired The Sunshine Shop, a local flower shop that has been a community staple for almost 45 years. The previous owners were looking to retire and turn the business over to a couple that could keep their wonderful legacy going, and the business skills I learned at QVCC have been so helpful as the business transitioned over. The communication tactics, accounting knowledge, and business concepts I learned at QVCC are used every day, and have been such an integral part of our success.

Balance sheets, labor laws, reading and writing contracts, having difficult conversations, leading and being led - just a few of the important concepts I use all the time that I learned at QVCC. QVCC and The QVCC Foundation's involvement in the community have also been a huge inspiration, highlighting for me - as a newer resident of The Quiet Corner - what a special place this community is, filled with such passionate people who truly value it. This has really inspired me to want to give back and dive into this community, to help support its members, and keep making it a special place. QVCC has taught me that being a business in a community is about much more than making a living, but rather, it's about uplifting the community and being a source of Sunshine for all its members. Your time at QVCC inspires you to give back.
I really love QVCC being right here in our community. It makes a college-level education accessible to so many hard-working community members. It helps strengthen our local work-force. The college works directly with so many employers, they support the local businesses and community, and you can get to the campus in less than 20 minutes from almost anywhere in The Quiet Corner. By doing what they do, QVCC really lifts our community up so much, in so many different ways.
Thanks to the entire QVCC team for everything they've done and continue to do for our community and for our local, family-owned business. They're such an incredible part of The Quiet Corner and are a wonderful model for what it means to build and support a community.

Each month, Quinebaug Valley Community College will share alumni stories through a series of questions & answers. As we celebrate the beginning of summer, our latest Q&A features QVCC alumni and co-owners of Ra Ra's Ice Cream Shop, Lauryn Hart '20 and Joshua Sandage '20.
1. What initially brought you to QVCC?
Josh: What had initially brought me to QVCC was the affordability of being able to further my education. After attending Ellis Tech, I realized the shop I had chosen was not what I wanted to pursue in my future. However, senior year I took economics which introduced an interest in pursuing business for me. Opening a business doesn’t necessarily require the expense of a four year degree from a university....
