Cole Caswell researches the remnants and patterns in our landscape that reflect contemporary strategies of survival. Through strata of observation, technology, subjectivity, and his surroundings, Caswell investigates geography and its impact on our perceived ability to survive. He uses traditional, historic and digital photographic media to investigate our present condition. For most of the year Cole is working and living in a nomadic format traveling throughout the county exploring our ability to subsist within the contemporary environment. Caswell travels in an 80’s VW camper van with a portable darkroom mounted to the back and uses alternative photographic processes to create works while in the field. When the warmer weather returns to Maine he migrates towards his studio on Peaks Island off the coast of Portland. In 2009 Caswell started offering Tintype portrait commission to the public under the project name AGNO3lab which is still actively being invited to various venues from wild hog BBQs in the everglades of Florida to the Colby Art Museum in Maine. Constantly working on many types of projects Cole has collaborated with the arts collective Spurse, The Nation Park System, and The Kohler Center for The Arts. He currently holds adjunct faculty positions at Southern Maine Community College, and Prescott College in Arizona – where he develops and teaches photography courses remotely. In addition to these teachings Cole has lectured at the Maine Media Workshops, Kohler Arts Center, Syracuse University’s School of Architecture, The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Tufts University and the Bakery Photo Collective.

About Nick: Chicago – the city, its colors, shapes and sounds – shaped young Nick Paciorek's world and brought him where he is today: a renowned artist whose work is seen from coast to coast.

As a teenager, Paciorek spent countless hours at art exhibits. He continually returned to his favorite, an Impressionism collection at a museum in downtown Chicago, impacted by the ability of an artist to control the world on canvas simply through color choice. It was then that Matisse became Paciorek's central influence.

As an artist, Paciorek aligns himself with a new generation of Fauvists. He uses broad strokes of brilliant color for their emotional impact.

Each of his pieces is a celebration of light and color, a vivid interpretation of his subjects. For him, choosing the exact combination of hues for each painting is foremost.

Almanza 3-Day Workshop
Tuesday-Thursday, June 28-30
9am-4pm
Artist Tricks and Techniques in Oil Painting with Cuban Painter Orlando Almanza

This three-day workshop will focus on giving painters at beginner to intermediate levels the knowledge and tools to bring their ideas and stories to life as well as artist tricks and techniques for unique styles and results.

The course will begin will an introductory conversation on Almanza’s experience as an oil painter and the main techniques he uses when it comes to oil painting as well as how to use classic technical resources.

We will discuss the importance of time in front of the blank canvas, thinking first about composition, color, light and shadow, aesthetic, and visuality. In your mind, how does the final result look? How do you imagine the finished painting?

We will also discuss the importance of the material you have at hand, including spatulas, brushes, clothes, how to organize your color and prepare your thinner. With all of these materials you can create different effects and results.

This class is about more than painting, it is about learning how to express yourself visually and learning techniques that you can apply at any level.

Artist Statement:
I am drawn to stories. To overlapping ideas and moments. Memories and stories from my childhood in the Cuban countryside mix and overlap with my present reality in the chaotic streets of Havana. I like to explore the nuance and layers of these moments. In my work, nothing is certain, nothing is finished, nothing is exactly as it seems. Spirit-like figures appear momentarily, half-truth, half-myth. Aggressive, fantastical beasts are nestled behind palms and colorful flowers. Lush landscapes and colors, given an uneasy sense of the unknown, of our hopes and fears and all things both real and imagined.

I love to listen to myths, legends and stories and to hold them in my mind. To imagine how they occurred, full of fantasy and mystery. I find my passion and work is to find the visual universe where they myths exist and to commit them to visual memory on the canvas. I find that these stories have a mind of their own and I find myself delighted and surprised by what appears before me.

Shevlino 3-Day Figure and Portrait Workshop
Tuesday-Thursday, July 12-14
9am-4pm
Alla Prima Figure and Portrait Painting with David Shevlino

This class is about painting the figure and portrait alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects. After a demonstration, the class will work from a live model. We’ll divide our class time working on both the figure and a portrait. Emphasis will be on simplifying and interpreting the figure and head as a series of basic shapes/planes described by light and shadow. In addition to discussing value, color and paint application, we’ll also talk about basic proportions of the head and figure. By learning to simplify what we see, we become better able to paint our subjects with greater clarity and directness. This class will be particularly helpful to students who wish to paint more loosely and to use their brushstrokes with economy.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio
Class Size Limit: 12

Fee: $500 member || $600 non-member
David Shevlino studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (certificate ’84) and the University of Pennsylvania (BFA ’92) and the Art Students’ League of NY. His work has been featured in national publications and he has exhibited his work and taught workshops throughout North America and Europe. He has also produced a series of instructional videos about his painting methods.

My exposure to art began as a teenager growing up in NJ near NYC. I began making trips to art museums in NYC when I was 15 and developed a love of traditional figurative painting. As a youth I found myself especially drawn to the old masters. Those early trips to the museum instilled in me a love of craft and a sense of where painting comes from. For most of my artistic career I’ve tried to take what I’ve learned about traditional painting and mold it into something I can call my own, which presently means exploring the place between traditional figurative painting and abstraction.

Conary and Kenney 3-Day Workshop
Tuesday-Thursday, August 9-11
9am-4pm
Workshop with Scott Conary and Shawn Kenney

Co-taught by Scott Conary and Shawn Kenney, this is a workshop about what it means to be an artist, about seeing past the exercises and techniques, necessary though they are, and trying to understand what elevates a painting or drawing. This is about our relationship with making work and the barriers between us and the work we want to make. We will look at amazing art, talk, paint, draw, make some messes, and challenge ourselves. The subject will be your work and your goals as an artist. Participants will bring pieces for critique and development, as well as, if they choose, create new work.

Sharing much artistic DNA, Shawn and Scott have been pushing each other as artists for more than 30 years. Each brings their own distinct eye and approach to both teaching and painting.

The workshop is open to all traditional mediums.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio
Class Size Limit: 15
Fee: $450 member || $550 non-member
Schmulowitz 3-Day Workshop
Tuesday-Thursday, August 16-18
9am-4pm
Experimenting with Change with Ida Schmulowitz

Matisse painted “The Pink Nude” between May 3 and Oct 30, 1935. This work was changed 22 times before completion and Matisse documented the stages in photographs.

In this workshop, students will complete one painting, but must be willing to make major changes in the work in each of the three hour sessions. A still life will be set up for the first class, that students will complete. After the break, major changes will be made to that still life and students have to change their painting according to the new arrangement. The next day they will continue with the same painting, but the still life will be changed again, and so on, until it is completed on the afternoon of the last day of the workshop. The finished painting will have gone through through 5 changes. Students can document each stage with a photograph, so the class can look back on the changes along with the completed piece.

It is important to keep a work open and changing throughout the process of painting, and keep the energy and looseness of brushstroke that you have when you start a work, through to the end. An artist can’t be afraid to go back into a particular piece, and changing a work in this way can create depth in the painting through layering of color and texture.
Matisse made changes because he was looking for the next stage in a personal vision. This workshop will force students to make changes, but will also help in the future on moving their work forward.

Materials
Acrylic would be the preferred medium for this workshop because they dry quickly, and students will be painting over areas from one class to the next, in the same day. If students choose to use oils, they must use a quick drier such as Liquin, but still might find it more difficult to layer color over color clearly, within the time limitations.
Colors should include a warm and cool red, (such as cad red light and alizarin crimson) warm and cool blue, (cerulean blue and ultramarine blue) warm and cool yellow, (cad yellow medium and lemon yellow), raw umber, viridian green, and titanium white. If students have favorite colors to add, that is fine. Other materials are one 18x24 stretched canvas, assorted brushes, and a palette knife.

Location: 3rd Floor Masiello Studio.
Class Size Limit: 15

Fee: $300 member || $400 non-member

Cyanotype with Brett Windham

The Cyanotype, which is also known as ferro-prussiate or blueprint, was invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842. Materials:
● Either pre-coated paper or plain paper and cyanotype 2 part solution (Potassium ferricyanide and Ferric ammonium citrate) ● Dried or fresh specimens to print (preferably from the conservatory)
● Access to water (large hose/faucet) - prints need to be rinsed and hung up in an area out of the sun
● 1 sheet color handout explaining history and technical process

I Will Supply:

● Frames to hold specimens still under glass while printing
● Extra specimens

Learn how past masters created persuasive seascapes. Learn how the psychology of perception determines how and what we paint . Learn how the past influences contemporary art in both realism and abstraction. The demonstrations include use of oil and acrylics. Your instructor also provides individualized instruction.

Day 2. Water in Wind and Stream: Translucence, Shadows, and Reflections in Motion

Learn How to paint the feeling of transparent water mixed with shimmering reflections. Learn How to paint the feeling of what’s under the water, what’s in the water and what’s on the water and the water’s motion within the same image?
In this workshop we explore how to make we make varieties of color effects within water and its variable reflections.  Learn how to evoke motion and space through color effects; how to create luminosity, halation, and sparkle; how to enliven your work with color a range of contrasts and harmonies. Learn to can use historic color codes to make more emotionally engaging paintings.  We learn to paint the illusions of translucent lakes, vernal pools, and  the effects of reflections on wet pavement. There will be demonstrations using, oils, and acrylics as well as individualized instruction.

Day 3. The Atmosphere in landscape: How to paint the mystery of mist and fog.

Class size limit: 20

Fee: $450 member || $550 non-member
Sam Allerton Green paints often, both inside and outside. The majority of his work is done plein air, on site, in a single session. This forces him to focus on capturing what it feels like to be there, rather than simply replicating what he sees.

Sam grew up in Providence, and studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art. He has been an artist in residence at The Creative Alliance at the Patterson in Baltimore, MD, and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT.
Bill Lane
Artist Statement:
"Everyday scenes from life intrigue me the most; be it a barren skyline, boats at the dock or city life on a busy day. I observe how the light plays into the scene and dances off the subjects. Because of this, I always work light to dark, saving those light values for the “sweet” spots in the painting."

   "With the objects I choose, and the way in which I paint them, I'm trying to present a world that feels familiar, solid, and grounded, hopefully providing the viewer a quiet break from the chaos.
    Regardless of the subject matter, I'm always considering the formal aspects of a painting: color, line, shape, and surface texture. Using these, I work towards a level of realism that still shows the hand of the painter -- I want the viewer to keep moving back and forth between "seeing" the three-dimensional objects and seeing the paint and brushstrokes that created the illusion. That back and forth is what I find magical in a painting."

Pushing Beyond the Landscape with Laurinda O'Connor

Let’s have fun during this supportive two-day workshop! We will deconstruct, interpret, and let go of our reference through gesture, value maps, abstracting our structure, color studies, various under painting techniques, and mark making. We will start each day with a demonstration. Each morning we will create small studies with different techniques, before we build our scene back up in the afternoon! There will be new approaches to try, boundaries to push, and plenty of individual instruction as we make the scene ours before ending each day with a group critique. All artists using soft pastels, oil, or acrylic paints are welcome. Please bring photographs.
