The CELT Course Design Institute (CDI) gives Iowa State University’s instructors skills, time, and space for designing or substantially revising their courses. CDI resources and discussions explore the concepts of backwards and accessible course design, assessments, and activities. Instructor participants will re-design at least two modules in their Canvas course using the new ISU Canvas course template. Participants must also complete a Quality Matters self-review to receive a $500 stipend. All participants will receive feedback and instructional design assistance throughout CDI.

Participant Requirements:

• Attend four synchronous online meetings: May 16th, May 23rd, May 30th, & June 6th
• Engage in an online asynchronous course from May 15th – July 28th
• Redesign at least two Canvas modules using the ISU Canvas course template
• Meet with CELT team members for consultation and as-needed support
• Complete a Quality Matters self-review
• Attend summer teaching technology online training sessions and Quality Matter online workshop (Optional)

Since we know that optimal academic performance is intertwined with a sense of belonging and well-being, what are those simple, small strategies faculty can do that help in your classroom? Are you running low on ideas, or maybe you’re unsure where to begin? This space will be reserved to talk about creating health-promoting academic spaces and include an open exchange of ideas to promote student wellness in your academic spaces.

Over the last few years, and now with the explosion of AI tools, as seen with the release of ChatGPT, AI is inching closer and closer to becoming more embedded in our daily lives. Generative AI models have sweeping implications for creative practitioners in the arenas of image-making and wordsmithing. Assistant Professor in Art and Visual Culture, Johnny DiBlasi and Olmo Amato, Instructor of Photography at the ISU Rome Program, will present their research and creative practice, which employ generative AI in their art-making processes in different ways.

This tool and study were initiated from VitalSource’s award-winning research on the effectiveness of the “Doer Effect”, a Learn-by-Doing approach based on learning science that improves the overall study experience by helping students discover what they know and where to focus next. The reading and practice data from our study helped us answer the questions “Are they reading the book?” and “How are students using their learning resource?”

Participants can expect to:

• Review and results of the study conducted in Dr. Odenweller’s courses

Iowa State University is committed to accessibility and affordability for all students. For this reason, the Iowa State University Book Store, with support from the Provost Office, Student Leadership, and the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), has instituted a Digital First Textbook Model. This means all course materials with an appropriate digital match will be converted to Immediate Access and delivered digitally through Canvas, which directly contributes to the University Strategic Plan initiative of affordable course materials. Faculty may request print format in lieu of digital at the time of adoption.
