Summer 2023

Campaign for Library & Archives Expansion

In conjunction with Oakley Collier Architects, the Village of Pinehurst is a few steps closer to finalizing plans to expand and upgrade the library & archives facilities. The much anticipated start date of mid-summer 2024 allows for various fundraisers to help support these extraordinary improvements. Follow us throughout the year to see how you can support this exciting endeavor!

Unique Finds

Every day there is something new to discover in the Given Tufts Bookshop in the Village of Pinehurst. Unique finds are anything but common and are snatched up faster than a tee time on Number 2. The most recent rarity donated to the bookshop was a signed copy of The Complete Poems of Robert Frost, published in 1960.

Dave Sinnott donated the autographed book he acquired in 1961 while a student at the University of Redlands in Redlands, CA. The world-famous poet made a visit to the university as part of a California tour and, as expected, the school bookstore laid in a supply of his complete works. Dave bought a copy and had the good fortune to meet Mr. Frost, who cordially autographed and further annotated the volume.

Dave has had it in his collection all of these years but has recently decided to downsize and has graciously donated it to the Given Tufts Bookshop, where he often contributes used books. This amazing relic is inscribed with the message "It is from having been contrasted that good and bad so long have lasted. -Robert Frost '60" and is priced at $550.

Frost was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1960, received four Pulitzer Prizes in Poetry, and was named the poet laureate of Vermont in 1961 by the Vermont League of Women's Clubs.

Name That Tune

Did you know John Philip Sousa spent summers in Pinehurst as a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Tufts? The composer of our cherished "Stars & Stripes Forever" and the Marine Corps official march "Semper Fidelis", he enjoyed trapshooting and long drives through the Sandhills with a stop here & there for a picnic lunch (pictured second from left with the Tufts). See what other fascinating information you can find by stopping into Tufts Archives for a visit, or browse online here!
