A New Chapter:

Message from Autism Communities Chairwoman, Doreen Jaggs

I am thrilled and honored to have stepped into the role of Chairwoman for Autism Communities, effective April 2024. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Paul Pedretti for his years of unwavering commitment to the organization. We are extremely fortunate to have Paul continue to support the organization with his knowledge and expertise as Chairman Emeritus.

We are also pleased to have welcomed David Viteri, President of A&D Entrances, to our board. David's enthusiasm has already contributed to elevating Autism Communities focus on fundraising initiatives, vital in supporting our ongoing growth.

As we look ahead, we have many exciting initiatives on the horizon. One of the highlights is the launch of our "Friend Responders" Campaign, which we announced last month in partnership with the Suffolk County Police Department. This campaign aims to build mutual understanding and trust between first responders and our residents.

Additionally, on June 1st we welcomed our newest resident, Steven Niciforo to his new home at Greenview Properties', North District Lofts in Bay Shore. If you haven't had a chance to see photos of his move, please visit our blog for the latest updates.

Through the collective efforts of our dedicated board, we have developed a comprehensive five-year strategic plan to enhance and expand the programs and services we provide. This strategic plan will help us focus our efforts and place us on a trajectory to accomplish our goals. We encourage you to review it to learn more.

Our social and educational program, Club AC has been thriving with many fun and engaging events. We are working diligently to enhance our activities based on feedback from our members.

Finally, fundraising is vital to our success, as we rely on individuals, foundations and events to raise the funds needed to provide our services, at no charge. You can help by joining us at one of our upcoming fundraising events listed below or consider becoming one of our monthly donors, for as little as $10 a month. If you are not able to commit to a monthly donation, please consider making a one-time gift. With your help, we can make a significant impact!

I thank you for being a part of our journey in opening up opportunities for neurodiverse young adults.

Warm regards,

Doreen Jaggs

Autism Communities, Chairwoman

Introducing Our Newest Board Member: David Viteri

David is the President of A&D Entrances. He started his career as an elevator mechanic for NY Elevator and during his 14 years there, noticed a disconnect in the entrance installation field. He took a leap of faith in his ideas and resigned from the Union, forming A & D Entrances. A & D has since then been in business for 15 years and is continuously growing.

During the last few years, David has developed a passion for getting involved in charities and fundraisers, participating in dozens of events throughout the year. When he discovered Autism Communities, he fell in love with the mission of the organization and rapidly wanted to get involved. David brings a fresh new approach to fundraising and is eager to help bring our vision to fruition.

"Friend Responders" Campaign Launch

VIEW FULL PRESS CONFERENCE

On June 24th, Autism Communities launched the "Friend Responders" campaign in partnership with the Suffolk County Police Department. Suffolk Police Commissioner, Robert Waring emphasized the departments strong support for the campaign stating “this is especially important as we believe it will give both the officers and the residents a better understanding of one another and alleviate potential misunderstandings during times of crisis. Our hope is that no matter the emergency, our officers will be recognized as a friendly face".

The Commissioner appointed Community Relations Bureau, Sergeant Joseph Steigele as Autism Communities' liaison. Sgt. Steigele will work with us to engage officers with our residents, which in the near future includes a meet-and-greet, organized regular check-ins between our residents and emergency responders, Smart 9-1-1 profiles on all residents, plus crisis intervention training and relationship building.

EMPOWERING GROWTH, CREATING OPPORTUNITIES

Just over a month ago, Steven Niciforo, our newest resident at North District Lofts in Bay Shore, took a significant step towards independence by moving into his first apartment. The past four weeks have been filled with a whirlwind of emotions which has brought new lessons and achievements...and Steven has met each one with an inspiring level of enthusiasm and commitment.

In just a short time, Steven has not only adjusted to his new environment but thrived within it. Steven's story is just one that is a powerful testament to the positive impact of providing supportive, inclusive housing for neurodiverse individuals. We are looking forward and excited to see all that he will continue to achieve.
