Dear One Health Institute Colleagues and Students,
Welcome to Summer! I can’t believe it is almost a year since I joined the team at Colorado State University! It has been wonderful meeting many of you and learning about the amazing work being done by the faculty, staff and collaborators across the university and local, state and federal partners.
When I look back I am so pleased with what we have accomplished including a successful One Health Day celebration; launching our the first Student One Health Award; delivering a successful One Health in Communities course focusing on West Nile Virus co-taught with the City of Fort Collins and Larimer County; and making great advances with our affiliate groups to develop a One Health Hub for Northern Colorado, address Climate change and vector-borne diseases, and Health and diseases at the wildlife-livestock interface. The current global outbreak of highly pathogenic influenza that is having a major impact on many wildlife species, poultry, dairy and other livestock and people, really highlights the importance of implementing the One Health approach. I am excited to think about what we will be able to accomplish over the next year.
I am so grateful to the One Health Institute team, thank you for everything you do to make the One Health Institute shine!
Have a great Summer,
Dr. Tracey Goldstein, Director

CSU's One Health Institute launched the One Health in Communities course focusing on the increase in West Nile Virus (WNV) cases in Larimer County, with 51 cases including neurologic disease and 11 deaths in 2023. This year the course enrolled 14 graduate and professional students from veterinary medicine, human medicine, public health, microbiology, immunology and pathology, and engineering. As a part of the course, the students conducted a seroprevalence study to measure WNV antibodies within the city of Fort Collins to obtain a better understanding of where exposure to the virus was occurring, a study that had not been done in the area for two decades.
CSU's One Health Institute hosted our Spring Affiliate Luncheon on April 24, 2024. The Institute’s Affiliate Network includes over 280 faculty researchers, organizational partners at federal, state, and local levels, and staff interested in One Health collaboration and research. Throughout the academic year, the Institute organizes Affiliate events to provide updates, activities, and networking opportunities for new research ideas. At the luncheon, Dr. Lorann Stallones, Human-Animal Interactions Research Coordinator for the Institute, presented an enhanced One Welfare Framework for addressing human-environment interactions. Following the presentation, attendees discussed science communication and worked to identify areas for improved communication practices in their research fields.
One Health 4-H Veterinary Camp brings youth campers to CSU's Campus
For the second year, the CSU One Health Institute sponsored the 4-H Youth Veterinary and One Health Camp. This year’s camp brought 80 youth campers and 16 chaperones from 28 counties in Colorado to CSU. The focus of the camp is to engage 4-H youth and to introduce them to the concept and importance of the One Health approach to improve animal and human health. Five One Health lessons were delivered on topics from zoonotic disease to the relationship between climate and health that anchored the three-day camp. Campers also visited CSU’s equine, infectious disease research, and agricultural research facilities to learn about CSU’s opportunities for veterinary education and other programs. The camp highlights a partnership between CSU Extension and Engagement, statewide 4-H leaders, local veterinarians, the CSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and the One Health Institute to support and inspire future One Health professionals.
The 49th Annual One Health & Zoonoses Conference was a state-wide conference held on April 11, 2024, that covered One Health and zoonotic disease topics such as the impact of climate change on vector-borne diseases, the current Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza outbreak that is impacting many wild and domestic animals, including wild birds and mammals, poultry, dairy cattle and people; WNV surveillance; One Health surveillance for bat-associated viruses, and more. The conference was a huge success and was hosted by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, CSU One Health Institute, and the Rockies and High Plains Vector-borne Disease Training and Evaluation Center with over 300 participants and thirteen speakers. Please find the conference presentations here.

Funding for this Mini-Grant Challenge will be made available to CSU undergrads, professional students, graduate students, and post-doctoral students. The grant opportunity will be released on June 15, 2024, in which we are seeking solution-oriented approaches to emerging disease threats that demonstrate the potential to inform on preparedness and response for African Swine Fever.
