NEW YORK STATE

ANTI-WHITE NATIONALISM SUMMIT

September 17 - 18, 4:00 pm

Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel

Our partners at the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes are organizing the summit to help funders understand the threat of the rise of white nationalism presenters to communities and to discuss strategies and grantmaking opportunities to combat the rise of hate.

Speakers include:

Kathleen Belew, Author, Bring the War Home Co-Editor, A Field Guide to White Supremacy

The white power movement in America wants a revolution. Its soldiers are not lone wolves, but highly organized cadres motivated by a coherent and deeply troubling worldview of white supremacy, virulent anticommunism, and apocalyptic faith. Historian, former CNN contributor, and author, Kathleen Belew, will give us the history of this movement.

Loretta Ross, Author, Calling In the Calling Out Culture 2022 Recipient of the MacArthur Foundation "Genius" award

In 1996, Loretta Ross founded the first center in the U.S. to innovate creative human rights education for all students transforming social justice issues to be more collaborative and less divisive. In her work, she transforms how people can overcome political differences to use empathy and respect to guide difficult conversations.

NEW YORK STATE RURAL PORTFOLIO

Since 2019, Engage New York has partnered with the Integrated Rural Strategies Group (IRSG), a project within The Neighborhood Funders Group (NFG). This project has produced the Resourcing Rural Organizing Infrastructure: A New York Case Study report, which documents the realities of what it takes to build community power from the ground up and the real and critical role that organizing in rural communities has played in the successful advancement of statewide progressive policy change.

Just this summer, IRSG announced the launch of their New York State portfolio. The following 13 groups are working on advancing equity not just in their communities, but at the state level. To learn more about the portfolio partners, visit IRSG New York Rural Organizing Portfolio Page.

We know this is just the beginning of this journey with the Portfolio – and we are excited about the initial investments committed to supporting these groups. We hope you will invest in this portfolio..

RESOURCE FOR NEW YORK

The Immigration Research Initiative (IRI) has been assisting communities across New York since 2021. IRI's work includes researching different economic contexts and helping to frame narratives, and actions needed to support individuals and families settling in various regions of the State. IRI's work is helping to illuminate the idea that ‘research is organizing’, and how data is helping all sectors investing in this work. IRI's is providing information to the Ellis Island Initiative, the Fund Excluded Workers Campaign, the Green Light Coalition, and census work.

David and his team presented in June to the Newcomers working group call that takes place bi-monthly. They prepared this resource to share with funders to learn more about their work, How Research Strengthens Immigrant Justice Organizing and Advocacy.

If you are interested in joining the bi-monthly calls, please email info@engagenewyork.org.
