Shakeology of the Month
STRAWBERRY BLUE MOON
It tastes like dessert, but acts like a multivitamin!

Why Shakeology?
We all struggle with food prep and getting all the nutrients we need in life every day. Shakeology solves both of those problems.  It literally fills the gaps in our daily nutrition. We still advocate eating clean, colorful, whole foods for your daily meals. Shakeology is a multivitamin in a meal.

It is quick, convenient and filled with vitamins, minerals, superfoods, probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants and protein. It is NOT a diet shake or a quick fix. It is whole food nutrition.

Need Shakeology at home for YOUR family? FREE shaker cup with purchase!

HEALTHY LIVING RECIPE

SUMMER DILL SALAD
Eating in the summertime is best when it's simple and fresh. Take this salad I tossed together with ingredients found in the refrigerator, just six ingredients but so satisfying. Follow this recipe or use it as a guide to making your own combinations.
INGREDIENTS:
Avocado, sliced
2 cups of mixed greens
2 TBSP of fresh dill, destemmed
¼ cup of crumbled feta cheese
¼ cup of pepitas, roasted
½ cup of peas
2 TBSP of your preferred dressing (I used Green Goddess)

Toss in a large bowl and enjoy!

P.S. The combination of peas and the pepitas helps bring the protein profile to a near to complete protein so you'll have all the amino acids your body needs to support functionality.

July 2019
It's not just weight loss. It's a new WAY of life.

Yes,  people come to Bay Athletic Club to lose weight, inches and drop sizes.  But they find much more than that on their journey.
They find a new way of life. They find energy, strength, happiness, confidence and better health.
I was emotional working on both of these member success stories with our Communications Director, Sarah Morrison.

Mindy LaFleure is looking forward to exploring the mountains of Tennessee with her husband on their 25th anniversary trip this fall.
She feels fit and amazing and will have the energy to soak up all of the adventures.

A lot has changed. Just six months ago, Mindy felt depressed every time she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. She was carrying around extra weight and was exhausted getting through the day.

Mindy was working full-time and raising three kids.  She ate out a lot and clung to the excuse that she was too busy to take care of her health. When her Aunt Timberly surprised her with a gift certificate to Bay Athletic Club for Christmas, Mindy took action. Having her aunt as a workout buddy helped.  Soon, Mindy's mom Cheryl joined them too.

They started attending group fitness classes and loved being able to spend time together as a family doing something fun.  Mindy enrolled in a 30 Day Transformation Challenge and lost 9 pounds. She was thrilled.  The results were helping Mindy gain confidence.

Mindy cleaned up her eating, too. She stopped choosing convenience foods and started eating food with good nutrition.

Her hard work has paid off. She has lost 25 pounds and is the strongest she has ever been.
She likes her reflection in the mirror and no longer feels like she is treading water through life.  She is in charge of her health and her future.

Mindy's husband Hank and daughter Megan have also joined her at Bay Athletic Club.Life feels better and she is excited for all the adventures ahead.

At the age of  42, Larry Donajkowski got a wake up call at his annual physical. He stepped on the scale and was nearly 300 pounds.

His doctor said she needed to increase his blood pressure medication.  Larry decided that it was ridiculous that he had let his health get to this point.
He asked the doctor to give him six months to see if he could improve his health on his own.  She agreed.

On January 1st, Larry walked into Bay Athletic Club with a resolution to take back his health. He meant it.

He was sick of avoiding crowded places like church and school concerts because of his size.
He was sick of breaking into uncomfortable sweats.
He was sick of needing a CPAP machine to sleep.
He was sick of not having energy to coach his son's baseball team.
He took action. Larry started working out at least five times a week.
He thought that having an active job with at least 5 thousand steps per day was enough. He knew his body needed more.
He challenged himself with cardio and strength intervals at Bay Athletic Club.

Larry also looked at his nutrition. He ate huge portions and snacked all the time.  His meals revolved around meat, potatoes, bread and noodles and was over 1500 calories.  Now he chooses lean meats and pairs them with vegetables, he loves trying new ones.

In a little over six months Larry has lost 81 pounds. He has dropped from a 3-XL shirt to a large and is also down 3 pant sizes.  Instead of having to increase his blood pressure medication his doctor actually reduced it. And he no longer needs a CPAP machine.

At the beginning of the year, Larry got a reality check. He did not ignore the warning signs. He faced them and changed his life. This healthy father of three has a better future ahead.

TIPS FROM NUTRITION EDUCATOR AMANDA FREELAND
Emotional eating is something that most people struggle with, even if they don't realize it.
Emotional eating is complicated because the trigger is different for everyone and so is the response.
  • The first thing we need to do is to be aware. When we are eating something outside of breakfast, lunch, dinner or a planned snack we need to ask ourselves why we reached for that food. Is it after work everyday as soon as we get home that we eat a handful of chips or crackers? Is it late at night when no one else is around to see us? Is it always in a drive through in the morning before we head into work? Is it after a phone conversation with a family member? Or maybe it's while watching a certain show.
  • The second thing we need to do is understand that food is something that is in our control and we often use it in place of things we cannot control. Many things can trigger emotional eating including lack of sleep, letting ourselves get too hungry, our kids behavior, work, our relationships and other things out of our control.
  • The third thing we need to do is put these first two things together. When we can be aware of when and what our triggers are we can take control back over emotional eating.
Here's the tricky part, foods we enjoy physically relax us and relieve stress. That's a good thing. That's why restricting ourselves can put more stress on us. We have to know the difference between enjoying a treat and mindlessly reaching for food that we didn't really need or want in the first place. If you feel like you struggle with emotional eating, start tracking your food. You'll start to see patterns and you'll be able to develop new habits that will help you reach your goals faster.

FOOD SWAP: This summer, reach for some fresh fruit instead of choosing juice. At breakfast, eat an orange or a grapefruit instead of drinking juice. Liquid calories are not detected well by your body and will not curb your appetite especially when all the fiber is removed. Store bought juices and smoothies can be even sneakier as they often contain added sugar and since they are not fresh, most of the micro-nutrients are gone. Fresh fruit is in season right now! Enjoy as much as you can, especially for breakfast and lunch.
SUCCESS STORY: Marie Kowalski is 76 years old and wants to keep feeling good. In the past three weeks she has met with trainer and nutrition educator Amanda Freeland. She has lost 6.5 inches and has started making small but important changes in her day like drinking more water, cutting back on her coffee and watching her portion sizes at dinner.

TAKE ACTION OVER YOUR NUTRITION:
We offer a 3-pack of personal training for $95. You can mix and match your sessions to include personal training for fitness and/or nutrition coaching with Amanda. Email [email protected] to get started.
