Open Softly, Yes, but Sometimes You Just Have to Backpedal

The best-laid plans .... Anyone hanging on through these rollercoaster times knows what a fickle thing a definite plan can be.

No sooner had Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens confirmed its June 2 opening Monday afternoon than this appeared in the Arts Blast inbox, a short two hours later:

Dear Morikami Family,

We apologize for the inconvenience and are extremely disappointed to say that due to unforeseen circumstances, we are unable to move forward with opening tomorrow, June 2, 2020. We will announce a reopening date as soon as we have more information. Please call 561.495.0233 or email  morikami@pbcgov.org  with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
The Morikami Team

A feature on the Japanese gardens scheduled for this issue is also postponed.

It will be so much more important than it ever has been to double check with a phone call or email before heading out to an event. If you're disappointed that a reopening has had to be pushed back, imagine how the business or arts organization folks must feel.

We'll get there, but we have to wait patiently and safely and remember that "there" might not be how we remember it when this year started.
Beginning with this issue, Arts Blast will be going on a summer schedule, publishing biweekly with a few unscheduled issues added when I just can't resist. Updates will be posted to Willi Miller's Arts Blast on Facebook, so if you haven't discovered and Liked it yet, this would be the time. You might also enjoy Willi Miller's Arts Blast Just For Fun. Willimiller.com will continue to be the online home for every Arts Blast since way back when it began. There's also an Art in Nature Gallery, some specialty pages, and, coming soon, the relaunch of On the Calendar. Please encourage friends to Like our Facebook pages & subscribe to Arts Blast.

MEET THE SWINGTIMERS!
Sponsored by a friend of Space Coast Symphony Orchestra
The Swingtimers Vocal Trio was formed in 2014 by Dave Hutson. The original purpose of the group was to perform as the vocal group of Melbourne’s Swingtime Big Band singing songs like Kalamazoo, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, and Sunny Side of the Street . Even though they still perform with Swingtime, their repertoire has broadened to include music of the '50s through '70s in a Manhattan Transfer style. The trio also sings doo-wop with Melbourne Municipal Band’s Rock and Roll Revue.

The trio consists of Dave Hutson, Diana Sageser, and Connie Maltby. How do three strangers come together and start making smooth three part harmony?

Baritone Dave has been singing since he was a child. In high school and college he had a vocal trio that sang at the local watering holes – Seven dollars a night and all the beer you could drink. After college, life got in the way of his musical ambitions. When Dave retired, he became a musician again, forming the Swingtimers. Dave also plays a mean saxophone in the Adagio Sax Quartet.
Just like Dave, Diana, the alto, has been singing all of her life. Members of her musical family used to harmonize while doing housework, so picking up the close harmonies of the Swingtimers was an interesting challenge and a flashback to her past. A lover of the Big Band genre, Diana was excited when she met Dave at a local sailing club meeting and he described his desire to form a close-harmony group to sing with Swingtime.

Connie, the soprano, is a classically trained singer, growing up in Brevard County and benefiting from the highly-skilled musician educators in the area. She started singing and performing as a 6 year old in community theater and never stopped. Learning to sing swing and jazz style has been a blast for her. She loves to watch the faces of seniors light up and sing along to their favorite songs from an earlier era. You’ve seen her on stage with the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra and many other choral groups.
The trio clicks with a shared love of tight harmony and desire to bring back some happy memories to our audiences. You can LIKE their page on Facebook . In February, the Swingtimers brought the house down at the Cocoa Village Playhouse’s Rock & Roll Revue in Concert with Len Fallen. Since then, the Trio has been hard at work in socially distanced rehearsals in anticipation of returning to the stage as soon as possible!

New Faces in Local Arts!
Alyona A. Ushe Named Executive Director of the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance
From the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance:

After a lengthy and thorough national search, and interviewing many impressive candidates, the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance Board of Directors, along with the support of St. Lucie County administration and community leaders, appointed Alyona A. Ushe to serve as its executive director beginning May 26, 2020.
Ushe brings over twenty years of leadership experience in launching and growing distinctly different organizations for both nonprofit institutions and municipalities. As the alliance’s Executive Director, Ushe will lead the implementation of the SLCA strategic plan, establish and cultivate strong partnerships with artists, organizations, events, and groups in St. Lucie County, and work towards engaging compelling arts and education experiences for residents and visitors alike.
“SLCA’s overwhelming success since it’s reincarnation is remarkable. Neil Levine, SLCA Interim Executive Director, has done an outstanding job in developing a powerful road map for the vision and direction of the organization,” said Ushe. “I am honored to take over the reins and continue to build on the great accomplishments while developing new initiatives to strengthen St. Lucie County’s cultural economy and support the local creative community.”

Ushe called St. Lucie County "a budding cultural mecca," and invites residents to "let me know how we can work together to make a real impact on the overall St. Lucie County’s creative economy and how St. Lucie Cultural Alliance can be of service to you specifically.

With the extended deadline for event entries in the Cultural Council of Indian River County's 2020-2021 Cultural Guide, the Art of Networking that is the kickoff for the publication's distribution has been moved back to October. Stay tuned for location and date.

HENEGAR CENTER ANNOUNCES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
From The Henegar Center in Melbourne:

The Henegar Center proudly announces that Dominic Del Brocco will be the new Executive and Artistic Director effective immediately. Dominic is no stranger to the Henegar Center having been a guest Director and performer in Henegar productions over the past several years.
For over 25 years Dominic has entertained across America. Through performing, directing, coaching, developing talent, and leading productions, Dominic has devoted a large portion of his life to Entertainment and the Arts. Originally from Baltimore, Dominic began his career as a performer and went on to spend 13 years working for Walt Disney Entertainment where he delighted guests as a show and parade performer before moving into production, creative, and leadership roles.
“We are really excited about Dominic taking on this leadership role at The Henegar Center. His talent, passion, and dedication to the performing arts will help us continue the growth and cultural impact we have seen this past year” says Doug Lebo, Board President of the Henegar Center since Feb 2019. “Until our closure in March due to COVID-19, Henegar was on track to have its first $1M Season. Dominic’s familiarity with The Henegar and its market will give him a running start as we begin to re-open in June with our Summer Theatre Camps and later this Summer with our MainStage production of GREASE.”
“I am honored and humbled to have been selected to lead The Henegar Center through a new chapter in this theater’s long history” says Dominic, “While I will continue to elevate the production quality and diversify the talent seen on stage, the larger impact will come from what we will do for the city of Melbourne and for the surrounding community. I admire Henegar’s history and I am excited to explore it’s untapped potential.”
The Henegar Center is also proud to announce Melinda Benya as the new Education Director and Office Manager. Melinda’s past experience at Walt Disney World Entertainment and Operations along with her role of Theatre Educator and Office Assistant at Titusville Playhouse for the past 5 years will be a great addition to Henegar. Melinda is also a talented performer and holds an AA degree in Musical Theatre from Indian River State College and a BA degree in English Creative Writing from UCF.
Nancy Turrell, Arts Council of Martin County's executive director, reports on a group effort involving organization members and the tourism office. Regular Zoom meetings include representatives of Florida Oceanographic, Historical Society of Martin County, the Lyric Theatre, the Children's Museum and the Arts Council.

" We decided to collectively do a poll to gauge resident sentiments towards visiting venues and broadened the group with invitations to the Barn, A.C.T. Studio Theatre, and StarStruck," Turrell said. "So far no one is rushing to reopen. The general consensus is to wait for the Phase 2 to come in play with groups of 50. For the performing arts groups, the wait is longer."

For the Arts Council, "The timing caught us at a critical juncture... we moved our current and next show to a virtual platform. The show following that, Court Room Sessions, which normally includes a big kick off music and art event, is cancelled, but we're looking at moving it to 1st Quarter of 2021 following the Clyde Butcher photography exhibit. Our concerts, for the time being, are being live streamed from private homes of the performers, but expect that to change soon."

The mARTies Awards have been moved from November to late March because of the challenge of the nomination process right now. They're also looking at ArtsFest and "what can we do proactively to adjust our plans to consider this new way of living. It's a lot to consider." With Phase 2 getting underway shortly, Arts Blast will be checking in for updates.

Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta has tons of summer fun planned.

The lively Super Summer & Fantastic Fall art exhibition includes work created by nationally-acclaimed puppeteers, FX animation engineers, and concept originators, including Carter Goodrich, who gave us characters for Finding Nemo, Despicable Me, and Shrek.

With current CDC COVID-19 protocals in place, the interactive exhibition boasts a MakerSpace where visitors can get creative using animation software, 3D printers, laser cutters, and art supplies. The main gallery displays dynamic, life-size puppets from award-winning plays Beauty and the Beast and The Wiz and a puppet making station for visitors to create their own puppet.

The Gallery is now open during its regular business hours, although the School of Art buildings are still temporarily closed.

Heathcote's Children's Garden

Friend Judy Coffman has been talking about the fun she and her husband, Skip, have been having working on the Children's Garden at Heathcote Botanical Gardens in Fort Pierce. She sent along a photo gallery to show she wasn't kidding! She said, " Great things are happening there. Especially great is a panda of tiles and other glass pieces. There's a word garden, a tile hop scotch and lots going on."

The Children's Garden isn't new — it was dedicated more than 20 years ago — but, like kids, it continues to grow. Heathcote is looking for volunteers, just in case any readers are looking for an excuse to join in the fun.

A New Look for Downtown Fort Pierce
A note from Chic and Shore Things in Fort Pierce:

The City of Ft. Pierce, in an effort to help businesses and restaurants recover from the lost revenue as a result of Covid-19, has allowed the downtown businesses to use parking spaces in front of their stores to extend their business outside for additional seating for restaurants and more shopping space for retail businesses. They have also provided free-of-charge fencing to designate the spaces that are being used as our ‘Parklets’. Kudos to the City of Ft. Pierce!! Each business is able to set-up their Parklet as they want. I know I speak for myself and other businesses I’ve spoken with, that this past weekend, we received a lot of positive feedback from customers. They said it looks so much nicer where the Parklets were finished and being used. A lot of large cities are going this route to improve the looks of their city streets.
A parklet is described in an email from Doris Tillman, City of Fort Pierce, as " a sidewalk extension that provides more space and amenities for people using the street. Usually parklets are installed on parking lanes and use several parking spaces." Parklets typically extend out from the sidewalk at the level of the sidewalk to the width of the adjacent parking space. Any downtown business owner can send in the proper form to get approval to set up outside that business.
There is no fee charged, Tillman said. " A lot of Main Streets around the country are doing this to give more space to the businesses and to allow people to be outside if that is more comfortable to them." It also gives more options for social distancing.
While it does take away available parking spaces, Tillman noted that there is plenty of parking in the downtown area.

Do an internet search for National Main Street parklets and you'll find links to cities all over the country that are adopting the idea.
Seriously Mixed Media gallery is enjoying not only a great parklet out front but a great new look inside. During lockdown, the gallery was ripped up from stem to stern and is sporting new everything, including what's under the floor.
The Edison and Ford Winter Estates will hold it's first summer plant sale June 13, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. outside the Garden Shoppe and surrounding areas. Horticulturists will staff a "Garden Guidance" table and answer guests' gardening questions until 2 p.m. Admission to the sale is free.
A Busy Brevard Symphony Orchestra
The good news : Brevard Symphony Orchestra’s subscription sales for the 2020-21 season are well ahead of last year’s tally. The Holiday Concert is on track for December, with sales strong already. Ditto the 250th Beethoven’s birthday celebration — the cake, candles, and program are in the works.

The bad news : BSO Executive Director David Schillhammer in an email this week announced cancellations that were not within the orchestra’s control.

“Unfortunately, the music will not be returning this summer. The City of Cocoa has cancelled our annual free July 4 concert at Riverfront Park. This concert has been performed for over 25 years, and it will continue on July 4, 2021. We share the loss of this important concert.

“The BSO, out of an abundance of caution, has made the decision to postpone Summer Evenings, our three-concert chamber music series at Suntree United Methodist Church. The same programming that was offered for summer 2020 will take place in summer 2021, dates TBD. We place the utmost importance on the health and safety of our musicians, audience members, and staffs of both the BSO and the church. Given the logistics of the series, we felt it was in everyone’s best interest to make this decision now.”
Chris Confessore, music director of the Brevard Symphony Orchestra, keeps Arts Blast readers up to date with news of virtual events.

" On Saturday, May 30, 2020, the Brevard Symphony Orchestra's "virtual" performance of an excerpt from  Jupiter  from Gustav Holst's  The Planets  made its online premiere.   Fifty-five BSO musicians recorded their individual parts at home and uploaded the files to Video Producer and Engineer Andres Roca, who spent more than 100 hours editing the individual videos and audio together to create a stunning and emotional virtual performance. A special video preview was shared with  BSO Cares  donors prior to the release on social media."

This is a series of videos created and performed by our musicians from their homes. There are a variety of moods - excerpts from great classical works, some lighter and humorous videos, too. More than 15 videos have been created and shared so far, with more on the way.

Enjoy BSO violinist Sash performance of J.S. Bach's Partita No. 2
2020 Virtual Exhibit continues through June!

Barbara Schlitt is Blue and proud to be. The Environmental Learning Center set up a challenge to try to recoup the financial losses of the past several months: If contributions reached $100,000 by May 31, Executive Director Schlitt would dye her hair blue, and is it ever blue!

With the help of two grants, the goal was exceeded, and Schlitt is promising to keep the vivid color until the 4th of July. To celebrate the victory, reopening has begun at ELC. Ford said, “We are excited to see our members, volunteers and guests back at the ELC - utilizing the campus as an extension of your own backyard, enjoying a pontoon boat ride on our Indian River Lagoon, taking a kayak tour or a stroll through our native plant garden or butterfly garden, fishing off the dock, or participating in some of our wellness classes. The health and well-being of our guests is our priority. A lot of time and work went into creating a safe reopening plan, which can be viewed on our website.”

He is simultaneously a great guitarist and a great educator."
