St. James Cathedral's annual festival of folk, jazz, blues, and popular music continues every Thursday throughout the summer. The doors of Kyle's Place Gallery open at 5:30 pm. for light food and drink, and the music begins at 5:45 pm. This week features soul music by Amour. Learn more.

 

Sandwich Sunday Meal Ministry

Our two monthly meals ministry programs now serve more than 200 people. Volunteers to serve our guests, make sandwiches, and assemble sack lunches are always needed! If you can help cook breakfast, please come to the kitchen between 8-10 am. Sandwich-making and serving begins at 10 am; clean-up starts at 11 am. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Judith Tribbett via email. Because this ministry happens during the 10 am service, there will be a second service for Sandwich Sunday volunteers at noon in St. Andrew Chapel.

Cathedral Work Day -- "Dugnad"

In Norwegian, "dugnad" ("help") is a word for unpaid, voluntary, community work. In preparation for the new program year, the Cathedral Chapter is organizing a "dugnad" work day on Saturday, August 29. Please mark your calendar and sign up online for tasks in the sacristies, cathedral, undercroft, choir room, and offices - cleaning, polishing, laundering, organizing, and having fun together! workday

Celebration of New Ministry and Installation of Dean-elect Dominic Barrington

Your prayers and presence are requested on the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost, September 13, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. for the Celebration of Ministry and Installation of The Very Rev. Dominic Barrington as Eighth Dean of St. James Cathedral in Chicago.

Holy Cross Day Workshop with Louis Weil

Bishop Lee invites clergy and lay leaders to join him on Holy Cross Day, Monday, September 14, for a day of reflection on the Eucharist with the Rev. Dr. Louis Weil. Weil is the James F. Hodges and Harold and Rita Haynes Professor Emeritus of Liturgics at Church Divinity School of the Pacific.

The event will take place at St. James Commons from 10 am - 2 pm, and a catered lunch will be provided. The event is free to all but we ask that you register in advance to help us plan for the appropriate number. Learn more and register onlineWeil

 

NAVE Voices Concert
Saturday, September 19 | 7:30 pm | Cathedral | Free-will offering

With musicians from eight states and the District of Columbia, NAVE is one of the country's newest choirs, formed in 2012 and performing throughout the US to critical acclaim. The brain-child of Dr. Bonnie Borshay Sneed, who conducted most of these singers when they were in college, the singers come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including choral conductors, voice teachers, full-time mothers, a NASA engineer, a Medieval philosopher, and PhD post-doc physicist. The concert will be a program of sacred and secular music. nave

Cathedral Gala Fundraiser -- "Our Fair Lady"

St. James Cathedral's annual gala fundraiser takes us to the Ascot Races! Join Eliza Doolittle, Professor Higgins, and your cathedral friends for a black & white-themed evening of music, food and drink, silent auction, and general merriment. Last year's "Phantom of the Cathedral" was a great success. We want to top it this year! More details and a formal invitation will follow. Mark your calendar NOW! CROPWalk

St. James Cathedral is the step-off point again this year for CROPWalk, whose long-standing mission is to end hunger one step at a time by funding programs that address the  root causes of poverty. Starting from and returning to the St. James Commons Plaza, a 2-Mile Family Walk will travel through the lovely streets of the Near North Side to LaSalle Street Church, 1111 N. Wells, and circle back along the inner drive. A 10K Lakefront Walk will travel alongside the Family Route but continue north to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 2335 N. Orchard, and circle back along the scenic Lakefront Trail. If you'd like to walk, fundraise, or volunteer, please contact cathedral coordinator Fran Horn via email or 773-643-5383. This summer, volunteers are invited to drop in and sing with members of the Cathedral Choir for the 10 a.m. Eucharist. To join in, gather with the choir at 9 a.m. in the choir room (below the sanctuary, on the lower level) and learn the anthems, Psalm, and hymns for the day.

On Thursdays from June 11 through August 27, St. James Commons, 65 E. Huron, will host a Farmer's Market featuring produce from the Gary Comer Youth Center. The market is sponsored by Strides for Peace, a non-profit dedicated to ending gun violence within the City of Chicago.

We pray in thanksgiving for the joys in our parish life, especially the upcoming marriage of Kelsey & Dale and of Kim & Eric;
