VPSF ANNUAL MEMORIAL SERVICE
AT CAPITAL SQUARE

In June, more than 100 citizens, public safety officials, and family members gathered to honor the memory of five recently fallen public safety officers, adding their names to the 880-plus on the Commonwealth Public Safety Memorial. During the annual ceremony, five newly inscribed names were recognized: Crozet Volunteer Fire Department Chief Robert C. Baber; Virginia State Trooper Chad P. Dermyer; James City County Fire Master Firefighter-Paramedic Timothy M. Killian Jr.; Charlottesville Fire Assistant Foreman David L. Sprouse; and Newport News Fire Battalion Chief Louis P. Stark.

Addressing the families of the officers in his remarks, VCU Police Chief John Venuti said, "We see your loved ones as heroes for their courage to pursue their dreams and for their courage to change the lives of others." Venuti also serves as the president of the Virginia Public Safety Foundation, which manages the memorial and led the effort to erect it in 2009.

NPGA Chairman-elect Chris Earhart

PROPANE CLIENTS FRONT AND CENTER AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Ben Rowe and a large contingency of Virginia Propane Gas Association members traveled to D.C. to participate in the annual Propane Days. Attendees used this event to participate in National Propane Gas Association meetings and seized this opportunity to meet with legislators to discuss why propane should play a major role in America's energy future. This was the first Propane Days under the new Presidential Administration and it presented an excellent opportunity to build the industry's relationship with the 115th Congress before they address the many items having an impact.

Not only was this event Tucker Perkins' first as CEO of the Propane Education & Research Council, but also Chris Earhart with Dixie Gas & Oil was nominated and voted into the position of NPGA Chairman-elect. We couldn't be more proud to show our support for Virginia leadership in the organization.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY BILL

The Alliance Group worked closely with the American Cancer Society and its Virginia Government Relations Director to pass HB 1675 and SB 974, which requires the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) to make information and resources on Palliative Care available to the public, healthcare providers, and health facilities on their website. Palliative care is provided by a team of doctors focused on providing patients with relief from the pain, stress, and depression that can arise from a serious illness. The goal is to improve Quality of Life for both the patient and the family. Palliative care is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness.

SOCIAL MEDIA BEST PRACTICES
WITH MAV3N DIGITAL

Our friends at  Virginia FREE and the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government & Public Affairs recently hosted a conference on The Virginia Economy: Workforce, Exports and Impacts.  Among the slate of speakers, Mary Anna Mancuso, CEO of Mav3n Digital, presented an updated look at Social Media best practices for organizations and individuals.

Mary Anna graciously agreed to share some key takeaways with our readers:

  1. Some users are unaware that Facebook followers do not automatically see all posts from pages they have liked. It's estimated that 10% of a page's followers are actually served a given post into their feed.
  2. Facebook is currently investing heavily in video. As such, Video posts receive top priority within the proprietary algorithm that selects which posts to serve to users.
  3. Along the same lines, video posts have greater traction than image posts, which outperform text posts. Engaging text posts that ask to do something such as answer a question, comment, share, or like are still superior to posts with links to external pages. Taking a user off of Facebook is the least attractive post for receiving priority within News Feeds.
  4. The Social Media "Rule of Thirds" suggests balancing post traffic equally between personal news, sharing others' content, and promoting your business. Personal posts like Birthdays or Holidays provides an important emotional appeal to balance other "sales messages" to your audience.
  5. A strong Social Media presence can positively affect Google Rankings for a firm's website.
  6. In an information dense marketplace, do not be shy about making an explicit Call to Action in your posts - "Like this Page, Follow Us, etc."

CELEBRATING CHRIS ATKINS

At the Alliance Group we always celebrate birthdays and participate in charity events but this birthday was a first!  Chris decided that he wanted to celebrate his birthday by doing something good for the Ronald MacDonald House. After much discussion and planning, the "young professionals" headed over to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond and concocted a feast for 16 parents and siblings of children from out of town and being treated at the hospital - a perfect birthday celebration for Chris!
