Dear Friends,
This month our newsletter will have a summer respite and not feature our usual editorial on aging and healthcare. We hope you have found time or will find time for some rest and relaxation as we gear up to whatever new opportunities await us in the fall and winter.
Wishing you a safe and happy rest of the summer.
Best,

Medical Mission Trip with the Nigerian Healthcare Foundation
|
|
This past July, Prof. Selena Gilles of NYU Meyers and Prof. Sandy Cayo of Yale, along with one nurse practitioner student, two novice registered nurses, and one BSN student, were afforded the opportunity to embark upon a medical mission trip with the Nigerian Healthcare Foundation to Imo State, Nigeria. On this two-week trip, nurses and students alike increased their cultural competency and clinical skills.
The Nigerian Healthcare Foundation, Inc. (NHF) was created to meet the needs of urgent healthcare issues in Nigeria and to focus on providing healthcare relief to the most populous country in Africa. "NHF's mission remains to support and conduct medical services; combat the spread of disease and unnecessary death, and prevent community deterioration by improving healthcare conditions within the Nigerian population in Africa." The NHF has been conducting medical mission trips with several volunteers for 25 years. The long-term goal of the NHF is to build health centers to provide its patient population with the best possible care. Until the health centers are built, the NHF will continue running medical missions with their temporary clinic stations.
During the medical mission trip, the medical team saw over two hundred patients a day. The team provided care for over 750 patients with acute conditions like hypertensive crisis, upper respiratory infections, sexually transmitted infections, and many chronic conditions like diabetes. The majority of these patients had preventable health conditions that were solely due to a lack of resources for treatments. The nurses and nursing students were able to engage in education on global public health and communicable disease while putting real-world skills to use in caring for patients. Not only were patients seen daily, but the NHF also provided three meals a day every day for the patients that traveled from afar to be seen by the medical team. The community the medical team served consisted of some of the most vulnerable individuals, and fortunately, NHF's commitment to that community continues to instill hope.

Integrating the Geriatric Surgery Verification (GSV) Program
with the 4Ms Series
Course and Case Studies
|
|
This series includes one introductory course and four case studies. The introductory course discusses the perioperative experience as implemented through the GSV standards and the 4Ms framework. Each case study focuses on one phase of the perioperative experience (pre-operative, intra-operative, post-operative, and discharge). Throughout each interactive case study the learner assesses and determines best practices for caring for the older adult patient based on the 4Ms framework and the Geriatric Surgery Verification Program standards.
