Happy August! I hope you are enjoying your summer!

One of my favorite things to hear from students is, "I look at the world differently now. I notice color, contrast, texture, and composition everywhere I go." Another comment I hear all the time is, "When I'm here, I don't think about anything else. It's so relaxing."

Another comment I hear often is, "I'd love to take a mosaic class, but my house is already full. I don't need more stuff."

I think everyone most people can relate to that - most of us are trying to simplify, not add more clutter.

But creating art is about so much more than the finished piece. It's about what happens while you're making it, and what it does for your mind.

That creative focus is a gift in itself.

Many of the mosaics made in the studio become meaningful gifts for friends and family. Others find homes in gardens, brighten a favorite corner of the house, or are donated to school auctions and community fundraisers.

The benefits of making art go far beyond creating something beautiful. More and more research shows that engaging in creative activities helps maintain cognitive function, reduces stress, and supports healthy aging. I'll be sharing articles on this topic in future newsletters, and I thought you'd enjoy this one

 from NPR.

*****

One of the many popular project in the studio has been mosaic rocks for homes and gardens. After all, who doesn't have room for a beautiful rock?

They're wonderfully versatile! You can tuck one into a garden bed; nestle it in a houseplant; display it on a desk, bookshelf, or mantel; or give one as a thoughtful handmade gift. They add a touch of color and personality wherever they land.

Cyndi created this great mosaic snail and heart rocks above, and I made the beach heart tot he right.

As always, thank you for being part of this wonderful creative community. Whether you're making art, admiring it, or simply finding inspiration in this newsletter and the world around you, I hope you find moments of creativity and joy throughout the rest of your summer.

Windows Classes!

Only one more windows class this summer on Sept 16.

Previous art experience is not necessary!

Previous art experience is not necessary!

Mary really had fun with this window! She used glass to cut out a sewing machine, and enhanced it with buttons and a really great pin cushion!

Zoom in to see the details. She even managed to include books and wine glasses!

*****

When taking the class, it's a

good idea to bring a few online pictures to

give me an idea of what you

like. It helps me guide you through the process and

choose supplies.

I supply all the materials

including the window; however, if you have sentimental items

like shells, rocks, sea glass, or dishware, bring them with you and I'll let

you know what will work in your piece.

People are always amazed at

what they can create in only 4 hours!

*****

By the way - feel free to reach out if you are replacing old

wooden windows in your home. I'll come by

and pick up the smaller ones (36x30 or smaller) to be upcycled

in class! Otherwise, they go into the landfill!

Helen did a great job on this ocean scene. The colorful shells add joy to the piece.

Patty made this wonderful piece despite never having cut glass before!

You can take a 4-hour class (which has no glass cutting) or the 6-hour class, where the pieces above were made. In the 6-hour class people can cut glass and make more detailed designs.

Suncatcher Class!

My last suncatcher class this season is Oct 1, 1-4:00.

Donna made such beautiful suncatchers!

*****

Students make three suncatchers in this 3-hour class.

If you have old jewelry (even

broken jewelry!), or pieces from loved ones, this is a great way to use them.

If you don't have any pieces

at home, come and use what I have at the studio!

The reason the suncatcher and windows classes only run

through September/October is that the windows need to stay open for good ventilation.

Weekly Classes

Tuesdays (full) and Thursdays!

10-12:30

House numbers are so popular.

Leslie is always making pieces for others. What a wonderful gift!

Mary, great sunflower tray!

Susan gets many of her pieces framed, which adds so much.

Marcia made matching plant pots for a group of friends.

Create Mosaic Succulents

Oct 24 and 25

(full, but let me know if you want to be on the wait list)

In this day and a half class we learn to make nine succulents: three out of pottery/china, one out of rocks, and five out of putty.

You will never look at broken crockery the same way again!

Stella, saved her extra succulents that she made in the March class to make another piece on bark. Stunning!

10-12:30 morning

12:45-3:15 afternoon

10-3:15 full day

Carol really worked hard on this amazing gift. It is the logo for the Unitarian Universalist Church.

The background is clear glass, so it also looks great in a window.

Gorgeous rock Karen!

Great pendants!

Kristy was one of the six of us that went to Guatemala a couple years ago.

This is the quetzal, a gorgeous Guatemalan bird, which we saw on a hike one day.

Andrea worked hard on this great slate and smalti (Italian glass) piece.

I love when families create together!

My niece Jingyi (left) came with her dad, stepmom, and daughter to the studio.

My great niece is the oldest of the four siblings, so I'm looking forward to having them all in the studio in future years!

Gift Certificates!

The best gifts are experiential! Consider giving a gift of a class for birthdays, family reunions, and other occasions.

Recipients can also use the gift certificates for artwork or jewelry.

Private Parties

Birthday Parties

If you are in an organized group (book, card, neighborhood), have a family gathering coming up, or have a birthday (adults and children ages 8 and up) let’s plan an event!

***

Adults can choose one of these three options:

1) coaster/light switch covers

2) mosaic jewelry

3) suncatchers (May-Oct)

In children’s classes, students ages eight and up can cut tile and cover a wooden shape of their choice.
